I researched this myself a while back. There are kits, but they're expensive enough that I'd wind up approaching the cost of a brand new Fenix E21, which is simply a superior unit in every way to just about anything I could convert my MM 2AA into. (Especially during the group buy on this site for the Fenix E21 -- but there are a million different AA flashlights to consider for even less $$).
If you search here, you should find a number of mods using this as a skeleton, but the ones I've seen are sketchy at best when you're looking at dependability and water-tightness. I concluded that my Mini-Mag is simply obsolete and expendable. Kind of a shame, but it's obsolete because there are so many outstanding units to choose from anymore, so -- not so much of a shame after all.
They are great battery storage devices .
Need to store a couple of AAs in a portable , shockproof ,waterproof , and stylish container ?
Why , it even has a lanyard hole !
Don't give up on the mini mag. I made two fire breathers with this trick.
All you need is a 25/32 drill bit and a steady hand and your spare p-60 drop ins will fit.
I made a single mode XML running 2 14500s at 2 amps and a ramping XPG 1 amp max with 2 14500s powering it.
Swapped out the xenon bulb for a Cree 5mm led bulb. Installed a diffuser film on lens. Made hole on reflector bigger. I use "dead" AA batteries in this light. It's pushing 1-2 lumens.
Where did you get that 5mm LED from? I've been thinking about doing the same thing to make a battery killer light.
I wonder if that would work in a Solitare to kill AAA's?
I ordered leds from http://www.digikey.com/
I would use 3mm led in Solitare.
Does no one read the sticky'd posts anymore?
I've made quite a few mini-mag mods. I also own a fenix E21. I'm probably biased, but I much prefer my modded mini's to any 2aa light I've seen, especially the E21 (was very underwhelmed by it). Considering the choices of emitters and drivers available, one can tailor a mini mag to whatever criteria one desires.
Want a good all around light that runs on a couple of cheap alks? Use the solarforce drop-in along with a frosted tight TIR.
Want a sleeper that'll blow away most larger lights in output? Use a triple xp-g along with a couple of 14500's.
Want the absolute brightest for it's size* 1aa format pocket rocket? Cut down a mini-mag and power the same triple xp'gs off of an IMR 14500.
O RLY??
What I like about the mini maglight is the classic look and the flexibility it offers for a custom build over anything available commercially. Btw, all of the MM mods I've built have held up to a lot of abuse and are as waterproof as the original - I've used them in the rain and could take a shower with them if I were into that sort of thing.... but no, I haven't gone swimming/diving with them :)
*The micro mag I built is just barely shorter than my LD01 (but obviously wider), and puts out over 1k lumens. If there's anything brighter out there comparable in size, I haven't seen it. See pics of it here for size comparison.
I'm familiar with the Match Mod.
Just not what I'm looking for right now. The OP would probably like the output of a Match Modded Mini Mag.
I keep my old incan AA MiniMag just as it was and I use it a yardstick to remind me (and to show other folks) just how far things have advanced.
Its a real eye opener to shine the ican AA down the garden and then take the two AA's out of it and drop them individually into two modern LED 1*AA lights. Lumens and throw (especially in a Sipik SK68 clone) is so startlingly different that if you'd have showed it to folks back in the late 80's they'd have thought that you had got your hands on Alien technology from an incredibly advanced race.
