What type of battery is in a 18 volt xrp Dewalt pack?

Hey folks. I just took apart a old 18 volt dewalt battery pack that included 15 small batteries. Wondering what they are as I have no clue. Going to try to attach a pic of one with a AA and a sipik clone. Oh well, no luck on the pic but they are slightly shorter and a good bit fatter than a AA. No wrappers or markings on any. They are slighter shorter and narrower than a C. None register anything on my two chargers and no reading on multimeter either. Im surprised everyone of them would be completely dead but I reckon so. Any opinions?

I have tried all of them in my new BT-C3100 with no reading whatsoever and on my i4 pro intellicharger I only get a steady 3 light flash.

3 steady flashing lights means battery is bad

Do you have a multimeter to check the voltage on the cells

Are there any letters or numbers on the wrapper of the batteries?

I can’t remember for certain, but I think Sub-C is your battery size in a DeWalt 18v non-lithium battery pack. Check out Wikipedia list of battery sizes:

Yep, likely Ni-Cd cells if the pack is more than a few years old. Read all the labeling carefully and you’ll probably find Ni-Cd or Cadmium mentioned. Ni-Cd cells are old technology, bad charging ‘memory’ will quickly reduce capacity. Plus these buggers are full of Cadmium, a nasty toxic heavy metal. Newer DeWalt packs are Li-Ion and are clearly marked. We’ve tossed a lot of the Ni-Cd packs from work, I’ve checked several cells and none will take any sort of a charge.

First of all the NiCad packs are still very popular with the contractors and are still being sold with new drills. I believe the DeWalt XRP is an extra capacity pack with each cell a little longer than the sub-C cells. I just pulled to of those from a recycle bin that were NOS. I charged them up with a benchtop power supply and gave them to a contractor friend that just bought a drill set with the same 2 packs. Needless to say, he was very grateful.

are $50 new but Amazon.com are around $30.

I use a 3 cell li-po in my spare 12 volt housing till I found them on sale moons ago.

Nice “upgrade” MOD
