What was your "gateway" flashlight?

Spiderfire P7 from DX.
Still a pretty nice and solid light…

Though now Zebralight is my favourite brand…
Have the SC600, H600, H31 and the SC52 is ordered from IlluminationSupply…

Nitecore EA4 is on the way from HKe and the BLF A8 is also on the way, so it’ll soon be Christmas again!

I’m not addicted, I just needed some new lights….

Mine was a LED Lenser yellow twistie dive light. My first light purchase was the x2000.

Not mine, but my dad’s, but it turned me on to looking into brighter and brighter lights:

My first flashlight, and it was because my dad’s was so much brighter than this that it went down the slope, this is NOT a photo of mine, I think mine’s long gone and I believe mine was silver instead of golden, mine was bought brand new in the very early ’80’s (I did the math I was in the cub scouts until I was a Weblo, therefore that flashlight was late ’70’s vintage, I’m older than I thought  ) when they still had the thin aluminum flashlights:

The replacement for this was a Rayovac flashlight:

After that it was a min-Mag, 2-D Maglite and I have not gotten off the slope since.

C’mon guys! I can’t be the only Oldster here!

Techincally my first Green maglite, since after the LED keychain ones started coming out I had like 2-3 of those(the switch boots kept wearing away)…then I got the good stuff…Fenix E01 and Tk12….been downhill ever since.

82 lumens seemed awfully bright for such a small light

Addicted? Who’s addicted? I can stop anytime I want to.

I actually do think that now that I have my nice little pocket carry light I will stop. (The flashlights still in the mail don’t count :stuck_out_tongue: ).

I always did like flashlights when I was a kid, but it was the development of the white LED that really got my attention. I got a single LED Photon when those first appeared and I’ve been gradually upgrading as better/cheaper lights appeared over the years. Never anything fancy, just something newer/better,maybe once a year, but always strictly in budget territory.

OK, I went a little overboard in the last 2 months, for some reason. I guess it was the Defiant 3C special that got me started on the slippery slope. $20 was the most I’d ever spent on one light since my 3D maglite many years ago. $20 is still pretty much the top end of my comfort zone, but I’ve been trying out multiple cheap lights trying to fill specific niches (or fill certain pockets rather).

I’m done. Really I am.

I think.

An UF WF-502B with an XM-L was what really brought me into the flashlight addiction. Coming from an old incan maglite, the 502B literally made a night and day difference.

I have had various incans when I was younger and always had a collection of them.I think the gateway light for me was a surefire nitrolon g2,which led to a centurion c3.I got roped into these buys at the local gun center, asking me if I wanted the best and other clever sales techniques including the blistering 80 lumen output. After some time the led revolution started with flashlights and wanting to upgrade to led really got me on a mission.

OK, it’s a little dated, but mine still works. It survived countless camping trips in the 60’s and beyond.

For something a bit more modern, though, I’d say the ‘gateway’ to LED flashlights was the Romisen RC-N3.

My gateway light was a light I still don’t own.
I was looking around on youtube and stumbled across Goinggear’s review of the Zebralight SC600

Knew the second I watched it I was hooked on LED lights.

It was the SC600 for me, too. I’ve gotten others since but I think that’s still my favorite.

For me the Surefire 6p basically started my light hobby. I got the LED version, and back then, it was the "new" thing.

I was absolutely dumbstruck that, that tiny little light, way better than the maglites I previously used.

Amazing to see that now days, the "low" mode on some lights easily beats the 6p's.

So, you haven’t tried a 4Sevens Quark Mini 123 (preferably the S2 edition)…

Anyone remember the Opalec New beam That was my first intense research and introduction into LED lights. (It’s an upgrade bulb.) I loved it so much that I moded it when the Nichia DS LEDs came out! Gave it away to some chic a few years ago and even now I miss it.

Like the OP, my gateway flashlight was a Fenix E21 as well.
Back in 2009, I decided to read some reviews before purchasing a Maglite, which is when I found out about such things as Fenix, EagleTac, Nitecore, Olight, JetBeam, flashlightreviews.com, forums, and purchased a Fenix E21 instead.

Streamlight TL-2, incandescent ...still have it . I wisk I could upgrade it to LED but I don't know how .

Rominsen RC G2. When it blew away my brothers 3D Maglite I was hooked.

It was the LED Lenser P7 that did it for me. I loved the way it was made, then I realised that there were all these other options out there, and so it began…

Believe it or not, in my case it was this “beauty”:
