Curious about the "V6" SMO XM-L drop-in on DX that simply won't fit in a Maglite C or D head, I decided to order one of the entire lights that it comes in, so I can compare it to my Mag mods that pair an XM-L with the D Maglite LED reflector. (I got a "V8" drop-in too, which is almost a dead match for the Mag LED reflector + XML and can hopefully be made to fit in a Mag D head with some metal grinding/filing/shaving of the inside of the head.)
If my pseudo-brand Chinese lights have to have a logo laser etched onto them, I prefer it to be UltraFire. This preference just dates back to years ago when that was the most prominent (first?, only?) "brand" of Surefire xenon imitator and generally considered to be of the highest quality among all the lights on DX/KD/etc. Romisen deserves a mention here too. I've never been disappointed with any hosts of either label, but unfortunately cannot say the same for the other xxxxFire lights, even the ones now well regarded like TrustFire and Tank007, which have been inconsistent with regard to quality.
It's not that I distinguish identical lights by which logo/"brand" is etched on them (and certainly not by which vendor supplied them), I simply prefer the sound/appearance of the two mentioned above over the others. Trailing closely are SkyRay, Aurora and TrustFire in no particular order. Dead last are silly sounding names like SpiritFire, SacredFire, FandyFire and Prairie Fire. I'm undecided about whether to place UniqueFire in the last category or slightly ahead of it.
Anyway, enough about that. The point is that based on the preference described above and nothing else, for the V6 host, I selected sku 102582 from DX, branded "UltraFire D1" in the photos, and ordered it on 4/22. A day later, after the order status had already gone to "packaging", I noticed that there was a black version of the same light for the same price with almost the same sku, 102584. I've only ever seen this host in "Titanium" color and other shades of gray, but never black before. If my preference for logo didn't warrant waiting for DX vs. faster vendors, the unique color certainly did. I contacted DX requesting a change to the order and they obliged the following day.
The official shipment date provided by DX was 4/29 from Singapore via SingPost (this was a first for me, all other orders had been HKpost). SingPost didn't acknowledge electronic notification of the item until 5/8 and didn't dispatch the package toward the US until 5/11. It arrived at customs on 5/14 and my home on 5/17. To my surprise, the packaging included a gift box, which protected the pristine black ano from nicks and scratches in transit. Very nice.
OK, 3 weeks from DX isn't too bad. It took longer to dispatch than some of the smaller vendors might have taken, but in the end, I'd be getting a black version of the V6 host to add to my UltraFire collection. Here she is:
Doh!!
Looking at the pics of skus 102582 and 102584 now, I realize that only the Titanium colored 102582 bears the UltraFire branding and the black one has the tube turned in every pic to conceal the logo. Oh well, it's still a helluva nice light, even with the stupid branding on the side.
Written comparison of the D1 to the single-emitter version of the HD2010 provided in post #134 here.
