What's a step up from DX $6 3xAAA headlamp, but still cheap?

I think this or one very much like it is what I bought a year or so ago.

- 1W White High Powered LED + 1 Red LED

- Powered by 3 x 1.2V/1.5V AAA batteries (sold separately)

  • 3-mode switch: Mid White > Hi White > Red

I basically like it, small, light weight, good modes, and the red is real handy at night when I don’t want to lose night vision or disturb others.

Con
Could be brighter, its cheap, clunky opening battery compartment, falls off head if upside down.

Wants
Must be small and light weight, no forehead telescopes, noticibly better than what I have, not “too expensive” otherwise I would just buy a H52.

Was chicken before, but would now consider a 1x14500 or “maybe” slightly larger with a good reason for it.

Anything with a cree chip.

They do a led lenser h7 copy i think. I got one a while ago for $8

There are also 3AAA headlamps out there with a xre, nothing fancy or bright at all, but compared to your status quo it is a lot brighter.
I have a cheap one with zooming head and a red blink led on the backhead.
You can also use a universal headband and a single 18650 lamp…

I have this http://www.ebay.com/itm/121161815800. It has only a sort of pink filter and not a red led. The bottom cooling fin was incomplete on mine, so I filed it off. Otherwise I like it. It is a cheap zoomy and not very water proof or otherwise high quality but good for the price. I am not sure a flood to throw zoomer is best for a headlamp, but I like them.

What is tempting me are the lights with the battery located in the back, seems like that would be a better balance on your head?

I’m not sure I want something as heavy as a 18650 with all weight up front.

Weight distribution doesn’t seem to be a problem with mine, but it is light, has a good head band and I don’t use it heavily. Battery in back would clearly be better balanced.

I got this for about 7$

Nothing fancy and first I was upset because it has only a electronic switch so a parasitic drain is there. I am also no fan of the 3AAA style lamps anyway.
But it works quite good with the first set of batteries so I am glad to have it from time to time to get some work done with hands free. It also don’t has to be super bright, the mid setting makes a useful light in the dark.

I have yesterday used the simple headband from fasttech with my editp14 and if I move the head fast it swings a bit. A sk68 fits better and is not so swinging.
But I missed the adjustable head of the 3AAA one, it is a nice feature as you can shine on the floor in front of you while walking with the head up straight…

This one is the one I moded to XML and nanjg driver and a clicky switch.

Check out fasttechs headlamp section there are the cheap eBay ones too, maybe a review or comment will help you…they also have the mentioned ledlenser clones

So if you are no heavy user for headbandlights you should order one of the cheaper ones and try if they fit your needs. If you need it for longer periods and more often a 18650 style would probably a better solution.
how often do you need it and how long has it to shine?

almost anything is better than the one you posted from dx ..Ebay 3AAA xre zoomies are about 8$ and have3 modes w/ a decent low and surprisingly no low pwm..Strobe on a headlamp seems odd but not a bad light for the price .

I've been surprised how useful some of these cheap headlamps are.

on the other hand ...

I'll suggest you buy a zebralight ..even a used one .Since it's going to be used as a tool .....

Nothing like having good quality tools.
