So the S2+ and C8 have both been updated with XP-L Hi emitters… Are there any plans to do the same with other models, such as the S2, S3, M1, and M2?
The M2 in particular seems like it would be interesting with an XPL-Hi. Heck, in a perfect world, we’d be able to choose between XP-L HD and XP-L HI emitters and OP or smooth reflectors in every light, letting us dial in the exact beam profile and combination of flood and throw we want. I know that is too much to ask, but it would be nice to at least see the M1 and M2 with the XP-L Hi.
For what i can tell, Simon has been busy making parts available (C8 SS bezel and various tubes) and updating the S2 and C8 (XPL, Biscoti, clear and tan ano). Updated M2 may follow? No new light since the L6 though. I’d be curious to know what’s next.
However, the budget flashlight market has many more players and great products every year it seems… and doing the right move for Convoy is probably not straightforward - or maybe it is?
Pretty sure you can request XP-L HI on your torch if you message Simon and request it. After all, for most of the 1x18650 models, the differences lie in the hosts and reflectors; the internals are mostly the same.
I have a feeling that an M1 with the XP-L HI would behave similarly to a C8 with a domed emitter. It’d be cool to see.
Really? I know you can on the S2+ and C8, as there are models with both emitters. Wasn’t sure if the different emitter require a different reflector or anything. So I wasn’t sure you could request the XP-L Hi in a host that didn’t have any models already listed with it.
Will have to message Simon. The M2 with XP-L Hi and Biscotti seems like it would be a great gift to someone who needs one light to do everything.
Well I know for sure the driver is the same, as you can request a Biscotti driver on any of them. After all I have it on an M1 and a classic S2 (not the + model).
If the emitter’s size matches the XM-L2 (or is smaller, after all there are plenty of XP-G2 Convoys in older posts), I don’t see why you couldn’t have the XP-L HI as well. I figure the problem would start if you tried to fit a biggun like, say, an MT-G2 or XHP.
Have tried XP-L and XP-L HI in my M1 and I definitely prefer the HI. Brighter spot, but still plenty of nice smooth spill with the OP reflector.
Anyone else feel that the S2 feels cheap compared to the M1 and C8? Just feels flimsy in my hand compared to the other two and the threads are pretty meh. Is the S8 any better?
Are you referring to the S2, or S2? I don’t have any experience with the S2, but I have the S2 in Desert Tan, and it is solid. That anodization job is one of my favorites.
To me, the Convoy brand seems to be about choice - in an S2+ you have something eight emitter options, four driver options, two reflector option (plus TIR with some work) and two firmware options.
Some of the things I’d like to see from Convoy are:
Better product information. There are so many options it can be hard for a beginner to choose between them. I’d like to see an explanation of what each model’s unique advantages are.
High CRI emitter options, at least for the S, M and BD ranges.
Make Biscotti the default firmware for the S, M and BD ranges.
A tube light with swappable TIR optics - no trimming, shimming, sanding or adjusting.
18350 tubes for the M1 and M2, just because tiny lights are cool
This is referring to the S2 not the +. One significant difference I’ve noticed is that the battery tube is much thinner than the one on the M1, but I guess it is a compact flashlight. Going to order a S8 to make a triple instead of using this one. The fins on the S8 should help with heat dissipation too. I’ll try the triple on the S2 first though since I have all the parts already.
If it’s not a three piece design (head, tube, tail), I’d guess that they could make a really nice smaller light. I’d love to see a dedicated 18350 tube light from them.
