All the DIY Convoy C8’s I find have the XML reflector. Are there any that come with the XRE reflector or do I need to buy it separately? Thanks.
This will help
Thanks, but I specifically need the XRE version.
You'll have to buy it separate.
That adapter doesn't help, that's for fitting a 3.5x3.5mm LED (which normally uses a 5mm hole in the reflector) into a 7mm hole. The XR-E uses the same 7mm hole as the XM-L, but the XR-E reflector and XM-L reflector are shaped differently around the base. XM-L reflector is very narrow at the base, the sides taper all the way in to very close to the hole, XR-E has a wide flat area around the hole (the sides are closer to parallel, which means it throws better).
Any reason you are using XR-E and not the smaller footprint XP-G
Yeah…after I looked…the XR-E is old and big, the XP-G is alot smaller
(sigh)... he needs a XR-E reflector. Instead of the orange-peel XM-L reflector the Convoy C8 comes with.
Because what Comfychair said. Thanks!
oh…not going into a C8 then…I’ll shut up now
Yes, it is going in a C8, the Convoy C8 is... a C8. Takes the same OD x H reflector as other standard (non-deep) C8s.
It's pretty well documented that the wide-base XR-E reflector throws better than the narrow-base XM-L reflector, even when both are used with the same XM-L/XM-L2. It has the same 7mm hole in either the XR-E or XM-L reflector. Either one will fit the same on the standard XM-L 7mm centering ring.
>Yeah…after I looked…the XR-E is old and big, the XP-G is alot smaller
you mean xp-e… and the die on the xr-e e900 is smaller
if i understand correctly you could shave down a xm-l reflector base to allow the xr-e to sit deeper in the reflector? or instead dedome the xr-e…
otherwise get a complete ‘q5’ c8 for around $6….

Compare the flat base around the emitter holes.
Newer isn’t always better. Larger package size also had it pluses.
XRE die is smaller than XPG die. It is the same size as XPE die, except XRE can be driven harder. That’s why is was preferred for throwers.
XPE2 may have surpassed it, but XRE still has its proponents.
