#Update# my original wish list was too restrictive.
I’m looking for a flashlight for my neighbor to walk her dog at night. She’s on a budget, but won’t be nearly as picky as you or me. Here’s the gist of what I’m looking for.
Rechargeable by plugging it in via a USB cable
Single mode perhaps dual (low &high) or tri-mode. No strobe modes.
Memory of last mode preferred
Smallish form factor. 5-6" length perhaps, like a typical 18650 sized barrel
brightest mode, perhaps up to 1,000 lumen
Buy it on Amazon if possible, not a firm requirement. (I like the fast shipping and great return option)
- $20 or less…could be a lot less?
Please let me know if you have something to recommend? Thanks
Have a pleasant time at this friendly forum, dschae1!
Looks like you joined about ten years ago, posted a little, and then vanished the same year.
I would look at Sofirn, Wurkkos, and Convoy, but I don’t have a specific recommendation.

My most-used dog walking lights are headlamps. Even with a lanyard, I like my hands free when I’m scooping poop. But, I’ve never had a decent single-mode headlamp. Andúril 2.0 has a simple UI with no blinkies, but, again, you’d have to configure that for her. I really like my Wurkkos HD10 for hands free dog walking. Convoy H1 is really simple with no strobe, if you put it in 4-mode for her.
Hello flashlight seeker! Welcome to r/flashlight budgetlightforum!
Almost every time someone asks for a one-mode light, what they actually want is a user interface that doesn’t suck. They don’t want to click through a bunch of modes or have the light change mode every time they turn it on. They don’t actually mind having multiple modes (and sometimes even find them useful).
All of the lights we recommend here usually have a well designed user interface that’s easy to use. Most of them have a feature called “mode memory” where the light will come on in the same mode you last used. Other lights have a dual switch setup, where the tail switch turns the light on/off and the small side switch changes modes. You can still change modes if you want though, which can be really helpful.
Many modern flashlights are hundreds or thousands of lumens on their brightnest mode and that’s just too bright for many tasks. It will also eat batteries. Using a medium brightness instead of Turbo mode can extend your battery life by ~5x or more! For these reasons, one-mode lights are really unpopular these days and are hard to come by, so please consider buying a multi-mode light with a good user interface.
Can i recommend the wurkkos fc11c? It shoukd be a good light for this because it gets bright enough when necessary, but can hold medium brightnesses for a while before getting too hot to stepping down in brightness. Its also a good size that makes it great for capacity and feel in hand, but nkt so big its combursome. Its also got usb c charging which is pretty handy
About the only true single mode lights I am aware of that are still made are Maglite incandescent lights, all probably well below 100 lumens output. Otherwise a Amazon search shows multiple lights available when I searched for “Single Mode LED Flashlight”. None spotted with USB charging at a quick glance and a best buy, taking D cell batteries, is linked to below. It claims 600 lumens for $14.
Aside from the Amazon and <$20 requirements really limiting options single mode and 1000lm are incompatible especially for a smaller light where heat and battery capacity will be a problem at that output.
If the requirements were loosened a bit I still feel that a 2 C cell Maglite has a lot to offer for a muggle light, especially as they’re now available with an LED.
I agree. I don’t think all my desired features can be had at that price.
I think I would back off of the single mode request. Still prefer no SOS mode though. And for brightness, perhaps 1000 lumens max brightness, and then about 600 and possibly 300 for the three modes. Memory of the last mode used would be nice to have as well.
