Who wishes for the power to go out?

Back in '04 during all of the hurricanes a lot of people lost power for a week or two .

That Autumn , playing with flashlights was not a priority , believe me .

So no , keep the power coming , thank you .

I don’t wish for it, but I sure don’t worry about it unless it’s in the winter. That happened once. Woke up at 6am to a 47 degree apartment. No bueño.

Now, I have a house; I have flashlights and lanterns and military surplus wool blankets and fleece ones too. We have a supply of clean water and first aid kits everywhere along with shelf stable food. We are realistically prepared without going all zombie apocalypse prepper.

Oh, of occurrence I also have about 40 lithium ion cells in long-term storage at maintenance voltage.

What’s just as if not more likely is a loss of some other utility. Like water. I live 40 minutes north of Flint, MI. You may have heard of Flint in the news lately. Last year my own city had a water main rupture. Only no one knew where. The city exhausted their entire supply of reserve water and just before we hit state of emergency status, they found the broken line, dumping 100,000 gallons a day into the local river.

That’s the real danger. That and well… Dow Chemical 15 miles to the west… I’m waiting for the toxic death cloud to wander over.

Absolutely not. I’m surrounded by soy beans and corn which means I don’t have city water. When the power goes out the water goes with it. Gotta have water. I keep meaning to put in a whole house generator, but I get easily sidetracked.

On the plus side, our well must run through some sort of underground waterway. I could run that thing 24/7 and never run out. No joke, if I dig a 3 foot hole in my back yard it will fill up about 2 feet with water. Now that I think about it, our house will probably end up in a 300 foot sinkhole one of these days.

I’d get a couple respirators with Multi Gas, Vapor, P100 filters.
Doesn’t cover every chemical out there of course.

Outages are a regular occurrence where I live when we have thunderstorms. Most of the time it’s only for a couple hours but it has been days before. I keep an oil lamp handy and do have a generator but only use it for prolonged outages. Its just big enough to power an air conditioner, freezer and a lamp. The only downside to no electricity is that I use a water well. I’ll eventually get around to solving that problem if I ever get enough $$$ .
