it has been so long since the power (hydro) went out for longer than a few seconds here. ( 3 years since it stayed out for longer than 4 hours.) who wishes for the power to go out so you “have” to use your flashlights & lanterns to show up your neighbors?
I actually never had a power outage so far, missed all of them due to travel. But I guess it would be a pain due to all the refrigerators and perishable food. Safety would also be an aspect.
Wonder how a power outage would feel like… no internet and such.
No thanks, there are no windows in the bathroom I use to get ready for work. Have used flashlights before but it slows me down. The power here used to go out weekly for at least a couple of hours, once during a snow and ice storm it stayed out for over a week. Completely wore out a generator with a Briggs and Stratton motor, replaced it with one that has a Honda motor. Not to mention the cost of running a generator, about $75 a day compared to $6 a day for electricity.
No thanks +1
I really like having electricity.
One time, many years ago, we had no generator and power went out. Was expected to stay out for awhile, my mother thought ‘screw this’. We went to a hotel in an area with power. Took our dog too of course. Smuggled in. Quiet, small, non-shedding.
Never had a power outage
Since I live in an apartment, power outage is rare. Only twice in my 18 years. But I do wish that sometimes shopping centers get a power outage heh
I think I know what you mean but I would rather things work. I like being prepared though just in case.
I show off to my neighbors anyways. Snow storms are a great excuse to light things up at night.
It’s winter, a lot of older folks live in my building and we have electric heat. Any power outage that would last long enough for me to show off my flashlight collection would probably mean at least a few of them would be suffering to say the least. They would be cold, miserable and the risk of someone tripping and falling in the dark is a very real possibility.
I don’t mean to sound like a grumpy old man who’s trying to rain on anyone’s idea of a good time, it’s just that I can play with my flashlight anytime I want without wishing for a situation that would put my neighbor’s health at risk.
Heheh a little time back I switched all electricity off when we had a thunderstorm, surely nice to use the flashlights then.
Just sell your house and buy a cave
Wish for continuous/prolonged power outage ?! NO way!
Most of the world’s societies are based on electrical use.
Unless you’re in a VERY rural , no electric service area
or a survivalist/prepper of some type , you don’t want
to be without some type of electricity for too long.
Power goes out here a few times a year, usually summer storms or like where I was working yesterday ice brings down a tree or limb onto the lines. More an inconvenience for me as it limits (but doesn’t stop) my internet time to what my laptop will sustain unless I break out the generator. I also heat with electricity but I’ve got back-up with that and everything else, often several layers deep, so it’s not really a problem. I just like having power
Lived without it in the worst ice storm we ever had here in another house for 5 days. My roomie forgot to add oil to the generator so it went out, but we had wood for the fireplace filling the room, downed trees everywhere to get more, kerosene for lights and heat, propane for cooking, and batteries for music and news on the radio, candles too. Hardly missed a beat. The worst was running out of coffee- GRRRR!
I do impress the masses with my lights when the power goes out. Loaned my neighbor a C8 last summer when a storm killed our power- she liked it so much I gifted her one with cell and charger for Christmas. Kind of fun but I’d rather have the power on.
Phil
I think it’s fun, we burn wood most of the time for heat but since the price of oil has plummeted we’ve been burning oil this year. So we always have plenty of back up heat available.
Got a generator to run from time to time to get the fridge and freezer cold again. It’s also enough to run all the lights in the house if needed.
It’s fun for the kids for an evening to run around with flashlights.
If it’s getting cold we can break out the direct drive convoy s2’s for heat.
but yeah, after a day it gets old quick!
I don’t mind when or if the power grid goes out. We run on solar and lead acid batteries so it’s not even noticed.
It doesn’t go out here very often. I would say I don’t mind, but right now in Northern Virginia would probably be a bad time. Too much snow on the ground right now to get out, and no power means no heat.
A few hours wouldn’t really bother me, but not yet. I’m in the middle of building my low current magnetic ceiling flashlights for general household illumination just for power outages. I need to make sure I have enough for my neighbors in my building as they will all be knocking at my door.
A power outage in the Netherlands this time of year means: cold. After natural gas was discovered under our feet, most houses got central heating. With electric circulation pumps. The gas supply itself won’t be interrupted, but a gas-valve will be closed in the boiler. Unless you have a 12V pump and gas-valve and a battery to feed it.
I love playing around with my lights, and I don’t need a catastrophe to do so
Spring/Summer/Fall okay, winter no
For awhile there we would loose power once a year for an extended time. Last time it was for 10 days.
No problem though, we have a generator and I would back feed the whole house. Watched TV, had heat and hot water etc. Only turned it off at night. Surprisingly, it would take about $30 of gasoline a day to run the generator. Electricity as supplied by the utility is such a bargain.
In another town I ran a 2 family and a 1 family with one generator rated at 5500 Watts. Back fed those two houses as well. I thought that was amazing as you would think it would take more. Everybody conserved and it all worked out just fine.
LOL, the only time I used a flashlight during the whole time was when I went outside each night to turn off the generator and then to find my way back inside.
Sorry,
I do, I do!
I love power outages in the winter. I put a lot of effort building a brick hearth and installing a free standing wood burning stove in the center of my house. I do enjoy an occasional fire, but mostly did it for an alternative heat source. For a while, I played with shading my house in summer. Man, talk about a crazy reduction in air conditioning need.
I think power outages are healthy. We have become too dependent on always available electricity. We are more soft and vulnerable as a result.
I haven't had a good power outage in ages. The best one I had was 5 days and it was wondrous.
