Why does SolarForce tease us?

There’s more to it than that… pill, springs, etc. I just checked a bone stock L2, the tube section (everything below the shelf, eg the section with a ~19mm bore) is 82mm long. The tube portion (not counting female threaded section etc) of an L2m extension is about 32mm long. The tube portion of a Solarforce 18650 extension is approximately 63mm long (not counting the female threaded section etc).

So that gives you an idea why he’s asking. We can guess that it’s around 145mm of tube section, but it’s just a guess.

Well i have a l2-d18, use it for my tripple nichia,
Ill check length tomorrow when im at home again.
(And see if it is possible to stick 3x aa in it too…, i like that idea)

I want that L2c, and would love to see a L2c-m battery tube to go with it (or would it be L2m-c?)

Thanks for checking, that’d be truly helpful.

My setup of an L2 with 2x L2m extensions is 170mm long (overall length, no head, no tailcap). It’s 129mm on the outside without the threaded sections on both ends, this is what should matter as head and tailcap sit on these points. But I think the threaded sections are quite similar in length on all Solarforce hosts, so overall length will be a valuable number.

Be careful with the 3AA, in my setup it did not work with a usual dropin. I tried it carelessly and my eneloops are dented at their backs now.

I recessed the driver in the pill and enlarged the space in the tailcap, as I usually do on my L2m/18500 builds, to get enough space. It’s a tight fit already.
I could cope with even less space (4x Nanjg instead of 8x and completely sunk into the pill / filing down the reflector) but I’d like to know if it’s doable at all. If the L2-D18 is more than 5mm shorter than my setup, it’s useless.

It makes a nice car light.

Total length of the tube from top to bottom is 16,8 cm. 3xaa won’t fit, they stick out the back, with a 16340 extension, it works prefect after tossing in a coin on the back 8)

The host usually just fits the cells, absent of the threads. 18650 cells measure about 65 to 68 mm’s. 65mm times 2 is 130mm’s. Just right for 2x18650 cells. Typical AA cells measure about about 50mm in length (Using the 14500 cell theory). So one would need a 150mm host (absent the threads) to get 3xAA cells inside.

I realize where you got the 130mm figure from.

I think I pretty clearly explained in the post of mine you quoted why the answer to HarleyQuin’s question is not as self-evident as you thought. As I said, SF allows a lot of space for the pill & springs.

HarleyQuin is clearly eking 150mm out of ~146mm (82+32+32=146mm of 19mm bored length). Based on my previous post here, SF is clearly providing way over 130mm of 19mm bored length for 2x18650 when you use their 18650 extension (‘extentor’ ;)) in fact they provide ~144mm that way.

As you can see from LanWolf’s post, it seems that this body is 2mm shorter than what HarleyQuin is using now. I’d say that’s doable. A SF pocket clip adds 1mm+ on it’s own I think, and if it comes down to it another 1mm can be sacrificed from the front of the reflector.

Thank you very much. Luckily that is very close so I’ll take a shot.

Wight is completely right here. Solarforce always use large springs on switch and driver, providing even more space than is needed for 2x 16340.

Example: The L2m in short mode, meant for 1x 16340 or 18350, has about 44mm innerspace. Quite easy to reach 18500 for 2-3 times the capacity: A smaller or filed down reflector, recessed or smaller driver, reverse clicky (it’s shorter than forward clicky), thinner washer for the switch while filing down the switch button; distance rings or clip as a last resort.

Part of what I did already with my light above and it should be doable with the L2-D18.

It shows what makes the Solarforce hosts quite endearing. The large hosts, the P60 design and the lego capability make them very modding friendly and versatile. And there is enough use for lights in the 3A ballpark

That makes me want to 18500 my custom l2m... You should do a writeup on that here

Wow. OK

As you may know Solarforce has now listed the L2C, and of course the D18 extended tube .

Thanks Windsurf

Give us a review of the L2C if you get one.

The head would look good on an L2p.

Wow. This looks like a very well designed and engineered light for a bike. I like it. I don’t see any pricing on it yet.
