what is the worst leaker - alkaline or carbon-zinc?
which one leaks fastest?
if it does leak (say you leave a battery in for 8 years), which one will cause the most damage?
(thinking here, of amount and corrosiveness of liquid)

I’ve had many alkalines of different brands leak but I can’t recall every having a carbon-zinc one leak. So that means the alkaline leaks the fastest
I’ve had Duracell D batteries basically weld themselves inside of a couple of maglights but my impression is that my leaking AA and AAA alkalines were all about the same when they leaked.
If I recall correctly, carbon-zinc batteries do occasionally leak, but the secretion dries out pretty fast and becomes some kind of fluffy chalk. Brush that away and there is little to no harm done. Alkalines leak faster (certainly when empty) and the secretion keeps on dripping and eating away metal parts.
Edit: batteries in remote’s are mostly carbon-zinc.
I just ditched a pair of Duracell D batteries that had set inside a almost never used 2D flashlight for circa 10 years after their expiration date without leaking. In fact they would still power the light, at least briefly, when I turned it on!
good data
but usually the run-down ones start leaking worse
because now the chemicals are different and in different places than when it was full
Guys, the Duracell is the undisputed king of leaking. There has never been a battery that leaks better and with such grace.
Rumor has it that Duracell hired the best engineers in the world. They spent countless hours determining how to inflict tbe most damage to electronics. They came up with the most corrosive battery acid that will render even the best electronics inoperable in a matter of moths without the owner suspecting anything.
They are a true marvel of engineering.
Out of the two, definitely alkaline. I’ve never seen a carbon-zinc leak, I’m pretty sure they’re relatively resistant to it.
Alkaleak is the worst, though I had a carbon-zinc cell leak once (only once over the years). Some sort of orange brown liquid, took a while to clean but not much permanent damage.
Even had some leak while still in an unopened pack.
All the Best, Jeff
I think carbon zinc is not as bad because they are designed for lower power devices like clocks or remotes where they will be left for a long time. My experience was worse with alkaline
