Wuben X4 Impressions review

This light was sent to me by Wuben at no cost for review purposes.

This is a very interesting looking light, it runs on 1 x 18650 battery which was included. The included battery arrived partially charged at 3.78V (which is excellent) and took 1625mAh to charge to 4.20V.

I decided to not read the manual and see what i can figure out myself as a flashlight enthusiast. I intend to read the manual soon and then do a followup to explain what i missed.

The light design makes it looks very high tech: a slider with 4 modes (which are not in an intuitive order), the electronic on/off button with built in rotary for brightness control, tactical on switch on the back, a multi function side light, 4 LED chips on the front and a belt clip that seems to be designed to add to the aesthetic styling of the light. There is USB C charging under the 4 mode switch, but this appears to make the light not waterproof though i have not actually tested waterproofness.

The unit i received is white, which i assume is painted as white anodizing is not possible (or is my knowledge just out of date?). So far the exterior paint is doing great, but i cannot attest to its long term durability. It is a very small light, surprisingly its my smallest 18650 light, making the Olight S20 look tall!

This light has 4 forward LEDs that are always on at the same time, you can’t pick between them. They appear to be: a diffuse light, two close up and a TIR “throw”. This light is not designed for long distance lighting, its very much meant as an EDC. They are cool white (6500K?) and appear to be low CRI. The high colour temperature and low CRI are things Wuben can improve upon in the future.

The light claims 1500 lumen at startup (it seems fairly close to that), and after a minute is ramping down to maybe half its original brightness presumably due to automatic temperature regulation. You can ramp it back to maximum by moving the rotary down a bit then back up. The moonlight is fairly bright, i could see having a lower moonlight mode.

There is a tail magnet and it can successfully hold the light on a vertical surface but its not very strong. It would be easy to knock the light down accidentally. Also it does not always hold on smooth vertical surfaces, it worked on the front of my fridge but slid down the side of the fridge which has a different texture.

It also has a side light with warm white and RGB modes. The RGB brightness cannot be adjusted while the white can. There are 7 RGB colours available.

This light has a latched tailcap cover with opening button instead of the standard screw on tailcap. The latch also has an included mechanical lock so the lid does not pop open in your pocket. You have to use a bit of force to get the battery cover closed which is due to its design and not the spring pushing on the battery (its almost as hard to get it closed with no battery).

Two things to keep in mind with this light, you have to remember to lock this light out when its in your pocket or the tactical on if on a light mode will melt a hole in your pocket/possibly burn you. In addition if placed head down and turned on turbo the two close up LEDs will melt plastic in seconds. I now have two melted spots on my mouse pad.

From a fully charged battery i ran it till it turned itself off (LVP), the battery read 3.03V. I could turn it back on high, but it quickly died again. I assume you can still run it on moonlight for a while in an emergency, though i did not test that. Upon recharging to 4.20V it accepted 3330mAh so it is likely the battery is 3400mAh as claimed.

So in conclusion this is an interesting light that works well as an EDC as it has a small size and many modes. You must remember to always lock it out when not in use and in your pocket or clipped to clothing.
