XR55 Cree from Banggood, Actually spring bypassed out of the box! *Pix added 6-25-15

  • This light truly is spring bypassed, top and bottom, right out of the box. The lanyard is also the braided paracord just like it’s pictured. Looking forward to pushing this one hard.

Hey folks, will someone take a look at this XR55 Cree from Banggood and tell me if I’m seeing things right? This is a 26650 sized light, looks well made with a SS bezel, cooling fins, and a proclaimed Type III ano, the thing I’m wondering about is in the tail cap and possibly at the driver…is this really spring bypassed from the factory?

I couldn’t stand it, just placed an order so I’ll let y’all know when it comes in.

6.25.15 Because inquiring minds want to know…

I cracked her open, of course. The pill is a nice big chunk of brass, press fit contact board with a floating 17mm driver inside that is ground wire soldered to the brass pill. This pill threads in from the battery side up against a solid step in the head. They put a LOT of thermal compound on the top of the pill so the heat would go into the big deep reflector, and there was a pastier thermal compound on the pill threads. The SS bezel was glued on, fairly easily defeated. This bezel is solid, you can definitely feel the weight of it, nothing chintzy going on here!

So I put a 20mm Sinkpad in with a new XM-L2 U4 1C on it, one of MTN’s 17mm FET drivers with 4 levels, no mode memory, and with an Efest IMR26650, rested, it does 4.79A for 1621.5 OTF.

.06A for 29.43 Lumens
.33A for 184.58 lumens
1.20A for 518.19 lumens
4.79A for 1621.5 lumens

The beam profile is nice, very specific hot spot with a ring way out at the edge of the spill, most likely won’t be at all visible in the real world but is inside the house.

Flickr is being buggy at the moment, will put some pictures in here as soon as the internet allows.

There was actually a dark grey thermal compound in the center under the star, with Fujik type rubbery material around it. Never seen that before but it’s obvious someone has their mind engaged here. Even with the screw holes thread, but alas, no screws. Not important as the fit of the reflector under the bezel locks it down nice and snug.

And a look at the soldered in ground wire, which I used of course.

All in all a very nice light, like it a lot. Immediately a favorite and I’m sure it’s run time vs output will be outstanding.

Looks bypassed to me, but is there any guarantee the photos are of one of their own samples? If they put the work into bypassing the spring, I would expect them to brag about it more.

Dale,
With your modding talent, why didn’t you choose this host for $23.7 from CNQ? I doubt you will swap those emitter and driver anyway.

I’d rather go for the host with extension. Don’t forget they have a discount code in one of Ric’s EDC threads. It brings it down to $24 shipped with extension.

Look at that picture again, where it shows the spring bypass. Notice the lanyard in that picture. Couldn’t possibly be a factory picture. They don’t put braided paracord lanyards with their flashlights for sale.

Great powers of observation David.
I looked at that torch a while ago but didn’t know what that “bypass” was

Well, how is that better than Convoy X3 17mm driver ready and an AR coated glass? Or even Y3?

Driver size according to site: 20.5~22mm (LD-29).

E2 host Group Buy discussion with vendor is happening right now. More updates in the coming weeks.

I wish I’d seen the host only variant, I’d have saved myself $14!

Mitko, the Convoy doesn’t have the heavy cooling fins applied in the same way, far few fins and far shallower.

David, I’ve gotten a few lights with that braided lanyard. It might well come with it. It’s shipped, so I reckon I’ll know soon enough.

One thing about ordering a light that’s complete vs. a kit is that if the driver is an odd size or the retaining ring or something is weird, all the parts are there. Easy enough to piggyback an LD-2 on top of the driver if it’s oversized, or replace it if it’s a 17mm.

Also, the light shown at Banggood has a smooth reflector, perfect for an amped up XM-L2. The light at CNCQ has an orange peel reflector, more suited to an XHP-70 or 50 or the MT-G2.

I believe it’s the same as a Convoy L5. I assumed Dale bought from banggood just to see if it came with the bypass.

I don’t know how I’ve missed seeing the Convoy L5, looks to be the same light. If I’d seen it before I’d have one already as I like it’s style… (frantically searching my collection to see if I’ve forgotten something)

Dale, you could be right, then. Maybe it is factory bypassed after all! I’m hoping you get it faster than normal, so we can all know!

I was looking at the various listings for the Convoy L5 to compare to this light, I found the L5 at Amazon. $82.74 plus $6.99 shipping!!! Holy cow! Betterhurrythere’sonly20left!

I’ve always thought the L5 was a little pricey, but I’ve been eying the host on CNQ for awhile now. I think with the OP it has great potential for an XHP70, and that SS bezel is so pretty. Foywouldbeproud.

Edit: For some of the newer folks, Foy liked Solarforce lights. He was known for grinding the tactical prongs off and polished up the bezels. He was also known for signing off with some kind of remark, maybe a wise crack, inwhichhewouldrunallthewordstogether.

Miss him and some of the other folks that used to be regulars here. :frowning:

I always read his reviews when I come across them, always an enjoyable read.

Good eye Dale.

I got this light in from Banggood today and would you believe it has wire bypasses top and bottom? AND the lanyard braided and all, just like in the pictures. First time for everything, right? The light looks very well made, fins are exceptionally placed and executed, but it’s only got a warm white XP-L and the standard H-M-L-S-SOS with even a next mode memory!

Obviously, the driver will have to be changed, but looking forward to seeing how it handles a hard driven XM-L2 U4 1C with an Efest Purple IMR26650.

How is the pill, brass, shoulder less, thread thru, 21.5mm diameter driver cavity and press fit? Seeing a lot of the L5 look a likes lately?
