XTAR VX4 Review

Thanks for that Sammy…
So if you were charging the lithium ion 1.5 volt double AA and triple A’s… would you just set the VX4 at 3 amps and let the VX4 and the batteries themselves do all the legwork in terms of setting the current what it needs to be… or would you manually reduce the current on the VX4 yourself?

It doesn’t matter because the VX4 switches into a special mode where you can’t set the current.

Gotcha thanks very much

Short conclusion: More for Beginners than advanced users, like the most Xtars

Here is my review:

Does the VX4 “remember” the selected charge current (eg. 500mA) after power down?
I like to always charge @ 500mA and am wondering if I need to select it each time.

Thanks.

It resets and automatically tries to select an appropriate charge current for 3.7V Li-ion cells. You can then adjust the max charge current.

It is 500mA for 1.2V Ni-MH cells.

Got it. Thanks for the reply.
I suppose it’s fine if I have to manually select the charge current each time for my 18650/21700 batteries.

Hi,

Any advice which one to get? Xtar VX4 vs Vapcell BL4

I own Vapcell S4 Plus (happy with it) , new charger will eventually replace it…

Reason for upgrade: Now i need also charger for Li-Ion 1.5v with Capacity tester (to understand REAL capacity AA/AAA from AliEx)

Thanks

I’m not sure yet. BL4 is coming for review.

I don´t have these chargers but according to my experience with Vapcell and Xtar, plus the options of these chargers I would prefer Vapcell.

Still also don´t like the Xtar-thing that the charger decides how fast I can charge, not me

fair point i like to set it up also how i charge…

I only charge AA and AAA NiMH, but to issues with Zigbee devices wanting 1.5v I tried 1.5V Li-Ion and it works finally…
Also ordered some LIR Button batteries, to stop polluting with 1x use batteries

What drives me to change is the Li-Ion 1.5v and Vapcell even I do like it, other member here is not very happy with it. (Vapcell BL4 : new multi-chemistry 4-bay charger / analyzer, up to 26800, with USB-C - #19 by Horilka)

Also VX4 has at least capacity measure option, where BL4 is just “stupid” charger without anything in Li-Ion 1.5v MODE

Seems like not many options on the market for Li-Ion 1.5v and i wanted also charger for Button batteries 2032,2040 etc where XTAR nor VapCell offers such device…so i still need to keep the additional charger.

Maybe I just wait with what I have (Vapcell S4 Plus + this USB-C charger CT Energy CT05), as from display/info point I wont get anything more.
This one was around 10euro, only for 2x batteries …but i dont need to charge daily.

Really wanted to upgrade, but seems there is no AllinOne on the market yet…

I don´t think Xtar is bad in general, but I never understand wth they thinking if they make a new charger in 2024 with basic things missing like individual slot configuration or brandnew chargers with one charging current for NiMH

Vapcell also make basic chargers but they listen to their customers and let me control the charging more than Xtar.

One of the most universal charger is the Enova Gyrfalcon S4000/S8000 Pro, but I think you have already see it here and maybe it´s not your price range. Still waiting to buy it in my country

Do you think I should get this VX4 instead of OPUS BT-C3100?

If you don’t use 1.5V Li-ion then the OPUS BT-C3100 might be a good option. It appears to give you more control over charging and discharging.

What if I’m just a regular user. I just wanna find a charger that easy to use, mainly for charging and sometimes do a test to see their health. In that case what should I get?

You gotta tell what cells you use, and what functionality you expect for these types of cell from charger. Because all these smart charges have their own limitations. There is no perfect charger.

Mainly NiMH, they’re all Eneloop, and some Li-Ion cells. I also have 1.5v but I already have its charger, however if VX4 is too bad far behind from C3100 in NiMH then I would rather choose C3100.

I think VX4 would work best for you, 2nd choice would be 3100, and BL4 as a 3rd choice. VX4 is reviewed pretty thoroughly - check if it’s functionality is for you and if not fall back to time proven 3100 (which also has some stupid quirks like absence of 0V activation, the need for dedicated power unit). BL4 is least reviewed one, at the end of the day it might be even the better choice if you can live with its limitations (like 1.5V Liion only charge mode) there are so many things that could be found only with weeks of testing and dozens of users experience. Again, none of these chargers will be perfect “all-in-one”, adjust your expectations.

I think VX4 would be the right for me, the only thing bothers me is its low 300mA discharge. And I would get rid of annoying fan and external power as VX4 uses QC/PD USB-C. Thank you for your help.
