Convoy S2+ Desert Tan Available Now!

Don’t know about Xp-L, but with Xm-L2 on the Nanjg 7135*6 driver it would still get too hot to touch after a while running on max (2.1 amps), and with Nichia 219C it never gets too hot to touch with the 7135*8 biscotti driver on 100% (2.8 amps) even after leaving it on for a much longer period.

To my experience, the 2.8 amps of the 7135*8 is nice to have outdoors for hiking, and the medium (35% on the mode I have selected) is more than enough for indoor use and ceiling bounce.

I putted ligted tailcap in my friend’s sand S2+. Warm white, almost yellow. I think it is great match with the body color. :laughing:

Just for the sake of comparing notes, I find 10% on 7135x8 to be great ceiling bounce for indoors (even if it’s a wooden surface), and 50% works dang well for walking a dark street.

Got my “desert tan” in today, along with my first clear ano S2+. Love it, its a great looking light. Its a bit darker color than I’d normally associate with “desert tan”, but that’s okay. I recall earlier in this design process it was sometimes referred to as the “Tusken Raider” and I think it nailed that look 100. My favorite detail is probably the finish texture. Its almost satiny and not nearly as shiny as the other colored Convoy lights. I love that almost-matte sort of look. So here’s a few pics, just for fun. Online pics almost never match the real-life product appearance 100 and I’m sure mine don’t either.

And a “collection” photo:

Also just for comparison’s sake, here’s the Desert Tan S2+ compared to two similiar-colored lights. The one on top is Flat Dark Earth cerakote and the one on bottom is Burnt Bronze cerakote. To Convoy’s credit, this anodized finish looks almost as matte as the cerakote does, not nearly as shiny as most ano. Great job here.

Also a bit of warning about the clear light, even though its off-topic for this thread. I waited and ordered mine directly from Simon through Aliexpress and I specc’ed both the desert tan and the clear with Biscotti. The firmware is great but the clear light came with a lighted tailcap, and it doesn’t work properly. Its like the driver is stuck in the programming mode, because its never reading a full off-cycle. I can fix it, no big deal, but Jdub you should probably let Simon know he shouldn’t be sending out Biscotti drivers with lighted tailcaps. They don’t get along without some extra work.

Same with my clear S2+, I talked to Simon and he offered to send me a non-lighted tail switch

Interesting. On the first two images it looks a terracotta shade, like burnt ceramic almost. On the third one, with the olive and sand lights (are those HDS Rotary’s?), it looks proper tan, though I wouldn’t know about the “desert” part :smiley:

Yeah, for lighted tailcaps, the Biscotti-loaded driver needs a bleeder capacitor from what I’ve heard. Still don’t see the appeal of a light on the button, but okay, it’s there for those that enjoy it.

Well don’t leave it unattended on high then! It’s a bit like saying cars are dangerous as you have to concentrate on driving.

I understand your point of view! :slight_smile:
I just shared my experience and I think we always have other modes and configurations (at least on the new driver, biscotti) to use without being always on the Highest mode! Or, if we do so, we must be aware of that!
If we need to use a S2+ on constant High mode (100%) for long times, maybe the 6 or 8 chips are not really the solution, as luminosity decreases along with the battery and as there is no temperature control.
The Sofirn SP32 I recently bought, on Turbo mode gets hotter that the S2+ with 8 chips, and if it its true that it steps down after 3 minutes (so say the specs, I didn’t try it yet), it is also true that leaving unattended for a while may damage the light and whatever may be around. So, we must pay attention to all these “powerful” lights we have :wink:
For me, the more chips, the better as I can always have maximum power at a time and then use it in lower modes, according to the situations :smiley:

@ emarkd
Thanks for the photos! It is really beautiful :heart_eyes:
I never aspired to have a tan version, but this one really makes the difference!
One question: does the pocket clip fits those “threads” in the head? (sorry, I can’t remember the name for those) :person_facepalming:

Thanks! :+1:

Yeah I’m really not worried about it. Mine won’t stay stock anyway :slight_smile:

Agreed, the color is quite different between the photos. White balance probably changed. The first few were all taken in the same place with the same lighting, and the light body looks like what I see with my eyes. For that last one, the comparison (yes they’re both HDSs), I used a much brighter light to help see the differences, but it all appears more washed out instead. Ugh. Photography is hard. :slight_smile:

Yes I’m sure the original driver can be made to work with a bleeder. I haven’t torn into the light yet but that’ll happen soon enough. I do like the lighted tails, somewhat just for the look but also for the functionality. My eyesight is pretty bad, really bad at night, so I like having lights I can find easily in the dark.

I think Convoy drivers are their weak point.
Their drivers can not compre to other budget tube light as Eagle Eye X5R for example, where you get:

- step down on high mode;

- no PWM modes;

  • more efficiency;
    Actually I would not mind pay few dollars more for this important features.

The efficiency is one bit of a problem with Convoy (at least with the old 3/5, which were the only lights of mine to EVER hit ‘low power warning’ levels; my Biscotti never got to that point, but dunno how the firmware interferes with the driver), I’ll give you that, but I don’t use my Turbo modes long enough to kick in stepdown and the Convoy PWM is so good even cameras don’t pick it up - I certainly don’t with my naked eye.

All personal opinion, ofc.

Some of us prefer having a user controlled step down instead of automatic/timer step down. For my use case of light painting photography, a step down during a long exposure could ruin a photo.

Got mine S2+ tan today! 8*7135 / XPL-HI U6-3A
First impression is: B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L ! :heart_eyes:

Nevertheless, I got 2 remarks to make.
1 - I don’t know it is the fact of being used to lights with rubber switchs, this one feels really different! The fact of having to press a bit more is “weird”, but not uncomfortable! I guess it’s a matter if use :wink:
2 - I don’t know if it is an anodizing problem or a pocket clip problem, but I tried to install it on the head (it fits!) and after that on the back, and the clip “scratched” a bit the body, leaving some black paint. I wanna believe that this is a clip problem and that I can “clean” the host…

Apart from these aspects: nice tint and beam, nice feeling in the hands, very smooth, and really beautiful colour! It’s my first one on this, and now I just don’t know if it will stop here! :smiley:

Really nice light! So, thanks to those involved on this! :wink: :+1:

@MascaratumB

The same thing happened with my clip on the clear S2+. I have a bunch of these clips from Simon and from Richard, and some are tighter than the others, but overall the slot on the flashlight is to fat for the clip to come in and out without damaging the anodizing. Same with my clip and flashlight from Nitecore. You either snap it on and leave there, or don’t use a clip at all.

I tried using sandpaper to smooth the inside rim of the clip, but that doesn’t help a lot, and bending it wider it’s easy to overshoot the correct size. Ultimately, I don’t think snap-on clips can be used without doing some damage on the short run. My first S2+ I used with the same type of clip, it fit more snugly, but it just took a few more turns to the scratches to start showing.

(bear in mind, this is before ever taking the flashlight for outdoor use, where it would be subject to some more damage)

Looks nice!
How did you put it in?
And where did you buy the lighted tailcap?

Regarding the clip:

I had the same scratching issue with the clip on my S2 (non +) but it’s not a big deal since I have no need to remove the clip. I find the clip to be an excellent fit and like it as it is, especially as I pocket carry with a clip, almost exclusively. The Convoy clip works well for me!

I build myself the board and used PD68’s ring pcb from OSHpark. You can read more about it here. And how I do it you can see some pics here. Or search my posts for lighted tailcap. I made a lot.

Eheh, I’ll use that flashlight a lot so the scratches won’t be a problem at all :smiley:
More, I like when they have that usage “bruises”, makes me feel like I invested well my money because I’ve used them!

The only reason I referred it is because it seemed a bit strange to get that “scratch”, but it’s a clip problem!
I like Convoy’s clips and they’re useful and usable! In this tan version, I may change it to the head sometimes if needed, but most of the time it will stay in the tail!

Received mine from Simon yesterday … U6-3A *8 (actually ordered the *6, but received the *8)

Quite impressed with the non slip tactile qualities of this color ano, AND the matte finish - BRAVO!

Now on to buy the shorty tube and magnet ring.

Mine came in too, from Simon’s store. It is the S2+ to a next level :slight_smile: : great colour and nice matt finish, the smooth reflector works very well with the XP-L HI and gives a great hotspot, the 4C that I chose has a nice warmish neutral tint, but more rosy than yellow, biscotti is a nice and versatile UI, and has a good low low, and the brown looks great with the black clip and switch cover.
Two minor imperfections IMO : in use I still like the silicon covered switch better than the metal one, and why the green o-ring atvthe lens?, should be black.

There’s a discussion above suggesting that the 8x7135 driver is too hot for the S2. I did a test about that a while ago, the S2 can handle it fine but gets too hot too touch : How hot does an S2+ get at 2.75A? Comparing an anodised Convoy S2+ with a fluorescent yellow powdercoated Convoy S2+
