My personal recommendation is one of the cheap ebay ones that run off of 4 18650s. Much more reliable than some random chinese ones with recycled cells.
I have one of these about a year Just Mobile Gum Plus Review - 9to5Mac
Handy for charging the phone, and charged my 16340’s with it and my xtar mp2 on hoilday.
Duracell CEF23 for AA’s and an Xtar WP2 MkII for 18650’s. They have the ability to both recharge cells along with using said cells to recharge other devices.
If you find one, please let me know ezarc. I have a 4AA USB box bought at a computer swap meet a few years back, but I have to take the batteries out to charge them.
Jaycar sell a 4AA to USB box, but despite the assurances of the knucklehead at the counter there is no circuitry inside to regulate voltage, just a switch and a diode. Not even a fuse. And of course, the cells must be taken out to be charged.
I did pick up a Tevion MPP 7400 on sale at Aldi a couple of months ago. http://www.traveler-service.de/cms/fileadmin/downloads/Tevion_MPP_7400/aus/IM%20Tevion%20MPP%207400-A5-6p-AUS-biop.pdf
Its a Li-polymer battery pack, 7400mAh, 2 USB out @ 1A each or 1@2.1A. Originally they were $30 but I got this "last one" for $20. So far it seems to work well; I've used it to charge phones, iPod, GPS and PocketWifi units, as well as power a AA eneloop USB charger. It charges from my Cottonpickers solar panel when I'm away camping. (Micro USB in - comes with AC adapter as well) If Aldi get them in again I'll get a couple more, they are actually pretty good value compared to other similar offerings I've seen. It can charge/supply at the same time.
x2… My cousin bought one of these from DX (I think). it was ~$15 bucks and it uses the same 18650 cells he already has for his flashlights. He pack carries it and uses it with his iphone to extend battery life. It was really small though… 1x18650
It’s cheaper to get some cheap replacement batteries for the phone off Ebay … Charge them all up fully and put them in a waterproof container before going camping … I don’t use my phone much except for a couple of texts each day (to keep in touch) and each phone battery lasts for over a week (usually about nine days) … I just take spare batteries when I go away … One extra per week plus a spare … My phone is never switched off … But I don’t have one of those all-singing-and-dancing phones like the children have … They have to charge theirs about every one or two days … Ridiculous !
.
I do also recommend buying a secondary phone battery as a backup.
You will need an external phone battery charger for convenience.
I think that having an infinite battery backup is good, so I have purchased eneloop kbc-e1 boost charger.
It uses 2 eneloop aa batteries, and can charge the batteries also. You can have as many alkaline or eneloop with you as power source.
Get rid of cheap 2aa battery boosters, they are crap.
As an alternative you can get energizer, duracell , camelion 2 battery boosters.
I searched like this http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/i.html?_nkw=18650+battery+box+usb
I have something very similar which seems to work OK, though mine did specify to use UNPROTECTED cells only, claiming dire problems with its own circuitry if I used protected. Mine charges from USB in. I fitted it with 4 new Panasonic 3100 green cells. Cell voltage at charge cutoff was 4.2V exactly.
I don't have an iPhone but it works fine on all my usb devices including an older model iPod and Nexus smartphone. As I understand it, iPhones and iPads require a sense resister or something in the charger in order to charge from it, but I'm not clear on the details.
(I hate how certain companies have to keep making non-standard produts BTW!)
I have an extra Energizer 4xAA iPod charger that you can have for free; you do need to get a different tip from Radio Shack (or online) for it to work with an IPhone.
PM me your shipping info, and I'll send it out Monday.
Why would a Ipod charger not work with an Iphone? I'm pretty sure they are the same. Also for anyone wondering you can just use a 4S pack a AAs to charge a Iphone.
