I am on a quest for a real pocket thrower. One that has a 45-50mm head with a smooth reflector and a pocket clip. Other nice things to have would be able to tailstand, a ss bezel, forward momentary with modes…. When such a host is found a well-driven, dedomed xpg2 should get 100kcd when installed.
You might be able to do it with a UF-V3 or equivalent. Gords1001 converted one to an XP-G2 and he says it throws like a laser. His isn't dedomed but if it's possible to hit then this little light should do it. I have two of them (both XM-L) and they are TINY in person and really throw well, especially for their size.
Ok, stuck in traffic (we’ve had a flurry over here…)
As you can see from the pictures, the beam is favourable, that’s driven at 2a tailcap current (read the thread for details).
If I was going to do it, I’d get a new pill machined from copper and direct bond a de-domed xp-g2 to it, I’d machine the pill for a 17mm driver (20mm standard) and I’d ram 3a+ down its throat. That should do it looking at mine which is a very tame mod in comparison, more built out of bits lying about than anything.
You’ve got me thinking now….its just this light is pretty nice as it is now, bit then, if I did as I suggest and machine a new pill, its a five minute swap between “usefull” and “insane”.
Oh, just to sweeten the pot, those shots don’t give the full impression, its better in person, and the light is running a keeppower 3400mah cell. 8)
I suspect a modded uf-v3 will cost significantly less, its smaller, and you don’t end up with a die image, it’d be more usable to me at least. I’m not a fan of aspherics, which probably explains why I don’t like zoomys.
Looks like I’m going to have to order a load of copper rod and speak nice to my dad, won’t be for a while though, had a poor couple of months at work, and its going to get crazy soon with a lot more work/responsibility for me
I’ll see if I can get some dimensions sussed out, I’m getting more and more taken with this idea.
I agree on aspherics, meh, I can’t stand seeing an emitter image, much prefer a reflector/optic and a nice traditional round beam.
A little off topic. I am using a de-domed xml drop-in in a SF L2m (in its short form) a lot recently. Sure it is not 100k but maybe 15-20k? It is quite an impressive thrower for its size. I am so happy with it that I ordered stuff to build a new de-domed xp-g2 drop-in driven at ~2.1A (6X7135). presumably it will throw much better. Will let you know how it turns out. Still waiting for the blank drop-ins from fasttech.
I have an xpe2 dropin at 1.7 amps, and an xml2 at 3.7 amps. Both with smooth reflector. I’d put the xpe2 at a little over 20k lux, and the xml2 at close to 15k. There both domed.
That would probably make a great thrower if that isn’t past the point of diminishing returns, but 47mm is already pushing it for pocket carry and I must have a clip. Just from my basic extrapolations I’m betting 47mm would be as low as you could go to get 100kcd, with an xpg2 at least. My OSTS R5 only puts out 250 lumens with the dedomed xpe. I accept that in a smaller light but for the light I’m trying to find 500 lumens would be nicer.
I have this (barely pocketable) 1x18650 dx-light fitted with a xpg2-2A and a 2A driver, head diameter 55, reflector diameter 48, fairly deep reflector. Got the led perfectly centered and adjusted the focus to get a very tight small spot. Measured lux at 1m and 3m with fresh Panasonic 18650 after 1 minute, same results: I get 50k@1m . Dedoming will deliver some more throw, perhaps a more expensive reflector and coated glass helps a bit, mounting on copper does a bit but not really much because heat sinking for 6W is already good (I do not measure a real difference between 0 and 1 minute). My guess is it will not be easy (or cheap) to get to 100k in a pocketable light.
