Trustfire TR-J18

Provided by: Tmart

Pros:

  • Lots of light with a reasonable amount of throw.
  • Well Spaced H-M-L modes.
  • Excellent machining, smooth threads even when dry.
  • Great quality all around.
  • Incredibly mod friendly.
  • Tailstands very well for a long tube with a big head.
  • Mode memory after approximately 1.5 seconds in the off position.
  • Versatility with either two or three 18650 or 26650 cells.

Cons:

  • Nowhere near the stated 8000 lumens. My estimate is around 3000.
  • Tailcap clicky is a bit awkward on a long light.
  • Extension tube machining doesn't aesthetically match the normal battery tube.
  • 18650 Spacer inserts are slightly too short and will cause some noise sliding back and forth.
  • Included flashlight holster is a bit snug and would inhibit a 'quick draw.'
  • Flattop cells will need a solder blob to function.

Pictures:

It arrived in a plain cardboard box. It was wrapped in a few layers of 1/2 inch bubble wrap.

Inside the box is a 2x 18650 spacer, 1x 18650 spacer, an extension tube, and a thick plastic trustfire bag (Also came with a holster that is shown later)...

Oh, and this flashlight thing; I believe it illuminates stuff or something like that. ;)

With my longest cells (69.7mm), the tailcap has to be just slightly loosened. I imagine with some of the longer 26650 cells length will likely be an issue with 3 cells, perhaps not with 2 though.

Here is the holster first with the extension, then without, and then showing the back side.

Size Comparison

Here we have the SRK, TR-J18 and a standard 3D Maglite.

BreakDown

Head, 2x tube, 1x extension, tailcap.

Nice, clean, and smooth threads, single O-ring on every threaded connection.

Above view of the head and tailcap both fully assembled.

Bottom of the tailcap. Firm Omten clicky, tailstands very well for such a tall light.

Disassembled tailcap. Definitely some resistance issues here, but all easily fixable if one were so inclined. Very nice threads makes it extremely easy to take apart and reassemble.

Partial head breakdown. Again, very nice threads making everything easily accessible. First light I've taken apart that came stock with good quality wire with ample thickness and pliability. Very simple to mod.

Opposite side of the driver.

Looking inside the driver cavity you can see the head is solid, a great feature I love to see in a flashlight. 2 Screws hold the reflector down on top of the emitters.

The screws stay in the emitter shelf when unscrewed from the reflector so there is no fumbling about with loose screws.

Here the head is further disassembled. The glass is held firmly in the bezel via the o-ring so there is no fumbling about with a piece of glass either. :)

Closeup of the beautiful smooth reflector. There are some blemishes on the flat parts, but these have no effect on the beam.

Here is the underside of the reflector.

And finally the 7 cree xm-l t6 emitters in series glued onto the emitter shelf.

Conclusion:

The Trustfire TR-J18 is a very nice quality light with a lot of the features I look for in a flashlight, though it does have some flaws. If this is someone's first multi-led light they will likely be blinded by the light; however, if you already have a few 3/4/5 emitter lights you likely wont be impressed by the output. If you are into modding there is quite a lot of potential for this to be a real lumen launcher. With just a simple driver swap you should be quite a bit closer to the stated 8000 lumens. :)

The focus on the last 2 series of pictures was on throw, the spill is more intense in the pictures than in real life, but the hotspot is near real life. The TR-J18 really forces a decent amount of lumens downrange even with the shallow reflector wells.

yep… the emitters is glued, I have one dead LED and it’s a PIA to take it off.
driver can be easily modify with R220 to gain significant lumens
as far for the price… you can get one for $45/free shipping from Ebay shipped from CA
and it doesn’t like flat top 26650 batteries :Sp

Thanks for pointing that out. Forgot to mention that above.

A small solder blob on the positive terminal of each battery should fix that issue.

With the glued emitter did you try a bit or heat or cold to help with replacement?

I tried to heat it up with hair dryer… but doesn’t really help… maybe i’ll by pass the dead one ( it’s in the middle ) and just use 6 of them for flood

I removed them all on a mod upgrade - tried my usual prying (Iv'e done dozens of glued MCPCB's this way) Well, put a flat edge tool into my hand on a slip - lots of red stuff... Ouch. After that, tried a plain old screw driver and light hammer and that did the trick! No damage to the pill top also, because if you position the screw driver just above the pill surface, all the force of the blows is to the star edge, so knocks them loose.

Upgraded to 6 XM-L2's with the IOS/KD 7X LED beast driver, and got 6,700 measured lumens. It wouldn't support 7 XM-L2's, so dropped the center one and worked out great - nothing noticeable in the beam pattern.

Could I can ask you to please post link for CA seller. I tried searching and came up empty. I’ve been meaning to get a large light and this one seems perfect for me.

Thanks

You mentioned it has decent throw and that ks from breaking it down it does like a great mod light for someone like me who’s just getting started and thank you for the other informative posts when I asked about the TR-J12 AND TR-J18.

It throws decent for a shallow reflector. It’s not going to be able to compete with the deep wells in the BTU Shocker, TK75, X60, and other lights with similarly large heads and deep wells.

Unmodded the TR-J18 has similar throw compared to my SRK, and also floods more. I was able to do a couple of quick comparisons outside, but taking pics proved extremely difficult in the –20*F weather. I’m hoping to be able to get them Sunday night at about 0*F.

~$45

here’s eBay’s store $45.99 TR-J18
but beware… the seller charge TAX no matter where you at in the US :Sp
actually I paid $40/free shipping ( with tax it came out to almost $43) at the time and it seems they have increased the price since then.
another thing to keep in mind, the driver can look slightly different than the original although it seems the same brightness.
you get aluminum driver holder instead brass ( the original)

edit heck for $10 more you can get 9 LEDs light although it’s the same brightness if not less than TR-J18 but more flood

An increase of 500 lumens as well.

Thank you all for the links you provided. It’s very helpful.

The 7x is the better starting point if you think you might ever upgrade to XML2. Do that to the 9x, and your driver options are reduced. The 9x 'beast drivers' will run 9 XMLs at a decent current, but not 9 XML2s, because of the combined higher Vf.

Beamshots up.

Thanks for posting beamshots. I’ve been contemplating buying this light and I think I just made up my mind. For $40 to $50 delivered I think it’s a great value.

Nice review. Thanks.

Good review!

I'll go ahead and amend this a bit; after having charged up all batteries in each flashlight before taking beamshots, clearly the TR-J18 throws better, floods more, and puts out more lumens than the comparison lights.

Each light in High

~50 yard beams,

~100 yard beams

Makes it easier to compare, unfortunately it got rather grainy in the particular process I used to make the Gifs. I'm blaming the intense cold for the slight movement between pics. :X
