KronoReview: LuckySun D80 Flashlight

KronoReview of the LuckySun D80 . This item was provided by GearBest/Karen for review.

KRONOREVIEW:

The LuckySun D80 is a single 18650 flashlight with a single XM-L emitter. The flashlight comes with a nice lanyard. It is shipped with ample protection in a sturdy, retail cardboard box. Light is controlled with a tailcap reverse clicky. There are 6 modes, starts on high (no memory) and UI is (H/M/L/Strobe/Turbo/SOS). It has a SS bezel, excellent AR lens and flawless, smooth reflector.

HIGH-LIGHTS:

VERY solid construction.
Toughened, thick, glass AR lens.
Lots of machined ridges provide ample grip.
Deep cut cooling fins.
Scalloped cutouts on rear of fins provide anti-roll feature.
HA-III matte gun-metal gray coating.
Reverse polarity protection (confirmed).
Solid emitter shelf. Should have a decent thermal path.
Anodized threads enabling lockout.
Pleasant beam pattern with a quick, but smooth transition from corona to spill.
Squared threads.
Fits protected or un-protected 18650s.
Reverse clicky with half-press advance.
4.0 amps on Turbo! WOW!

LOW-LIGHTS:

6 mode, funky UI (High/Medium/Low/Blinkies/Turbo/SOS).
XM-L
Little to no thread lube.
Clicky button is too thick and prevents tailstanding.
Head o-ring mounted behind lens instead of in front.

PICTURES

Packaged in a nice, retail cardboard box.

Well protected on inside with ample foam packing. Just light and lanyard.

Standing on bezel. Hard to notice, but ’NECO is printed on button.

Tailstanding, very unstably due to ‘bulging button’.

Sideview.

Head separated and logo closeup.

Separated into 3 pieces.

Square threads.

Cathode side. Button with outer rim instead of spring. Notice the normal ‘s’ on logo (not reversed like it was on the P26650-L2).

LED view.

In hand. Nice size and very compact for such a bright light.

Comparo pics for size. Convoy C8 and D80.

Tailcap end. Nice lanyard relief, but not too useful when button interferes w/tailstanding. I will try to trim inside of button and see if that resolves the issue.

Quality lanyard.

DECONSTRUCTION

Tailcap parts.

Annodized internal threads with bare Aluminum shelf. Shelf contacts brass retainer of cathode side of driver.

Anode spring.

Omten PBS-101C switch. Nice, brass retaining ring underneath. Love the 6 indentions on their retainer rings. They look good and provide more ‘chances’ in case you bugger up the others.

Emitter. Bezel and AR lens removed. Unable to remove reflector. Seemed to be wedged down by o-ring. May try later

Driver pics. Solid shelf in background with small dimple in center. Thermal path should be quite good for high amp turbo mode.

Inside tailcap. Anode spring and backwards ‘digital light’ logo. I like it when manufacturers don’t use off the shelf parts. It’s a nice touch and shows some pride by the maker.

BEAMSHOTS/NIGHTSHOTS:

Beamshot closeup on stained concrete floor.

Control shot.

Turbo beam shot. (4.0 amps!) Lights it up really well.

High beam shot. 2.4 amps.

Medium beam shot. 1.0 amps.

Low beam shot. Amps unknown…wouldn’t show on my DMM.

SUMMARY

This is a stellar light from LuckySun. Quality HA-III anodization in a nice gun-metal gray, square cut threads, intricate brass driver and tailcap retaining rings, decent thermal path, lockout, and 4 amps!!! Machining quality is excellent. And even though it is a single 18650, it puts out an amazing amount of light while maintaining pocketability. The UI is not my favorite. It also uses a first gen XM-L. However, perhaps that is a good thing considering the inability of some newer XM-L2s to pull high amps. With some minor changes, the LuckySun D80 would make an exceptional BLF SE torch (hint, hint). Overall, a monster of a little light!

KRONOMETER patented rating: 4.25 out of 5.

Karen at GearBest has advised me that they still have an active coupon deal going on the LuckySun D80.

The coupon is GBLUCKYCM.

The coupon price is $19.38 for D80.

How did I miss this review? Nicely done!!

Thanks KC.

Thanks Krono. Your hand makes it look small even though I know its bigger than a C8. Can you add a picture with the two together?

Not bigger. Here’s some pics for ya:

Comparo pics for size. Convoy C8 and D80.

Updated in OP/review.

Wow. That is small. I had it in my mind it had a 50mm head. Thanks.

Hi Krono, can you please put a coupple of pics for compare size with a Jax miniC8 and EE X6? I can’t buy all of them!!
Thank you very much.

(I have to choose one light to buy, after EE X6, from D80 and Jax mini C8 )

It doesn't include the Jax but you can look at the comparison photos in this review.

Thank you very much Bugsy, seems to be very similar (+o- same length )

I have both the D80 and X6. I will honestly tell you that the feel and heft of the X6 is nostalgic for me - not to discount the EE quality.

Now that I have said that....

To me, the D80 is ugly – compared to the X6 (again it is Maglite generation thing) – BUT the D80 is extremely comfortable in the hand. Even in stock form it puts out quite a bit but that weird UI is something else. On the stock unit it would be better if there was no blinky stuff before you get to Turbo or whatever they call it Surprisingly even without mode memory (on the stock version) I do like it and where it starts but not sure if I would use it at work without memory.

Stock D80 vs Stock X6.....D80 has more output

Thank you too.
X6 for me is fantastic, nothing to say (except the driver  ).

About D80, I don’t know…maybe is the Mag fascination like you, but for me the shape is so so…esthetically I prefer Jax miniC8…but like said, I can’t buy them all. So, with an EE X6 still on my table, must choose from the brutal power of D80 and the physique du rôle of mini C8 (whereas I have no one “big” C8, just the smaller 1xAAA)…

Does anyone have the dimensions of the D80 reflector?

I will add reflector measurements later.

DBCstm’s measurements (Thanks Dale!)
Reflector diameter: 36.2mm
Reflector height: 21.6mm
Reflector tapered base diameter: 15.8mm
Emitter hole diameter: 8.1mm

(Updated in OP/Review also).

Thanks krono!

How does the light output compare to the C8 on high? It seems they may be similar… especially to the human eye, as it takes a much larger increase in lumen output for it to be noticeable to people.
