Imalent DM21 review (930 lm, XM-L2 U4,18650)

Greetings,

Today’s review will be dedicated to an interesting (I never saw a regular, “boring” flashlight from Imalent) flashlight from Imalent, the DM21.

What’s so special about it?

1. The flashlight is being controlled by touch, and not a regular button presses. Imalent specifies some “body induction”. I don’t really know what it is, I only know that it’s not capacitive and not resistive, because it does work if I wear regular gloves.
2. There is a wheel, that controls the flashlight brightness. You can set the brightness before you actually turn on the flashlight.
3. The flashlight has a built-in USB charger. The flashlight can charge regular 18650 from other manufacturers, not some proprietary cells.

What about the “holster” ?

1. The holster is a very complicated electronic device, it’s closer to a portable universal charger.
2. The holster can charge 18650 batteries from it’s built it 5000 mah li-po battery, or using USB input. The holster can be used as powerbank and be powered by it’s built in battery, or a 18650 battery.

Shall we start?

The flashlight (and the holster) are packed inside a small box, with a typical Imalent colors.

This is the actual view you discover after opening the box. I would not tell that it is a flashlight, if I would not knew that in fact it is a flashlight.

The flashlight comes with a user manual (very extended one, with a special part related to the mega-holster), USB cable, 18650 battery installed in the flashlight.

Well, I already explained all the functions that the “holster” serves. It has a soft touch finish (nano, according to Imalent). You can install the battery, touch the “mode” button twice (I say “touch” because you don’t actually press it) and battery charging starts. A single touch will show the battery status.

Some measurements:

1. While charging the powerbank draws 0.75A
2. The flashlight draws 0.75A from USB power supply while charging a battery
3. The flashlight draws 0.67A when being charged from the powerbank.
4. The powerbank could not handle charging Ipad Air 2.

Here is the flashlight. No quality issues, if I wouldn’t know the manufacturer - I’d say it’s Nitecore, which is not a bad thing.

Hot tactical

UI, and future improvements

1. A single “touch” will turn the flashlight on and off.
2. A double tap (from off position) will show the battery status. Red means time to charge, green … you know, all good.
3. Holding the sensor area will enable strobe mode, strobe will be on as long as you hold it, regardless if the flashlight is on or off.
4. The wheel moves wery smoothly, the brightness is being changed very smooth from lowest to medium modes but the brighter the ramp up is more intense.
5. There will be some changes in future production model, the lowest mode will be lower (about 20-30 lumens) and a lockout function will be added, using triple tap. Also, the flashlight will be sitting more securely inside the holster.

Some bold statements

Feeling in the hand, comparing with one of the best flashlights …

Here it is in real life. Definitely not a thrower, but very useful for everyday situations.

Not a thrower, but it’s really not a surprise

Conclusion, final thoughts
Another special flashlight. If you find it’s features useful, I guess it does not have a lot of competition, it’s unique as other Imalent flashlights.

I’d like to thank Imalent for providing me the review sample.

Thanks for the review!

  • Would this have problems of accidental activation if put in a (large) pocket?
  • Is there step down on the 930 lumens mode?

I am glad you liked it.
I don’t think there will be an accidental activation.
Regarding step down - I guess there is, but it being hidden well, you don’t see a sudden change in brightness in the max mode, at least I didn’t.

Not for me that one. Far to complicated and esoteric in construction and design. The thirteen year old in me would want one though!

Excellent review though.

Great review by the way. And it looks like the rubber finish is coming off on yours too.

Thank you. Yes, you are completely correct.

wearing those holster make me look like robocop

Thank you for the very nice review.

I am really interested in the touch switch design, Imalent is always innovative and I love that spirit. I never had imagined that flashlights can actually be incorporated with touch screen, touch switch… etc.

By the way, if you want the light to constant-on do you always need to put your finger on the touch switch?

No, once you touched the flashlight is on.

Great review. Nice close up pics. Thanks!

The lowest mode is 30 lumens?

curretnly it is about 80 lumens, but I reviewed a pre-production model. In the released version it should be around 20-30, according to Imalent.

What’s the runtime at 80 lumens?

Imalent claims 80 hours.

I see. Does it have momentary-on feature?

hold the “button“ is strobe from on and off.

i have the final Version on the way to see how they improved it from what is sold until now

I contacted Imalent to find out if Gearbest is selling the “preproduction” one or the revised one. Here’s the reply:

Can’t wait to receive mine

well done Imalent!

sent some lights and did hear what came back…

if the low was lower, i might have been interested since the UI looks interesting.
how does the wheel/dial for the brightness work, or rather how large is the range you can turn for brightness change?

i dhl says it left germany yesterday…

maybe its here tomorrow
