Has anyone tested the D18 with Sanyo NCR18650GA? I know it will have less initial output, but it shouldn't heat up as fast and thereby hold it's output longer.

When I first got the Emisar D18, I didn't have enough high-drain button-top 18650s to test the D18 with, so I used Sanyo NCR18650GA, which fortunately worked on the D18.

I have since then been able to get a few button-top VTC6, and re-tested the D18.

On an uncalibrated lux meter and doing a simple ceiling bounce test (with fully-charged 3x GA and fully-charged 3x button-top VTC6), the button-top VTC6 has higher lux reading.

Yep - Captain Obvious. GA, and even better: Samsung 35E's are a great cell to up the runtime, lower the amps, though the 35E's in my experience do higher amps than the GA's. You could be pushing the GA and 35E cells rather high on the amp draw though which lowers the runtime -- funny how these tradeoff's work.

Check the batt comparator: https://lygte-info.dk/review/batteries2012/Common18650comparator.php

You'll see the GA cell doesn't lose much capacity when drawing 3 amps vs. 10 amps - yes capacity lowers but not a lot.

On 3 cells like the GA on the D18, speculating amps is 15-20 amp total (???), so only 5-7 amps per cell, which should be fine, and of course, only that much on max output.

Even if the draw is closer to 30 amps, still 10 amps per cell is good on short max runs.

The light is already really dense feeling and certainly not light weight. I can’t imagine who would want any other material.

In fact, I think the 18350 tube should be seriously considered for the weight savings and for the cool “puck” look.

I would want that. A cu+ti setup like the D4ti run would be awesome and I’d buy it immediately. You’re right though – it would certainly not be lightweight and other folks may not like that, so I may be in the minority here.

Well I’m probably the wrong person to comment since apparently I’m all alone waaayyy over here, but this is what I’m doing. I don’t need a D18 so I haven’t bought a D18, because I know that if a special run came out I’d want it and then my “standard” one, which I didn’t need anyway, would just be an unwanted extra. But that isn’t a great solution because I do want a D18 and if that special run never happens, I’ve held out for…nothing?

Why?!

30W+ would be charging the cells at around 1C.

That would be very high, cost quite a bit, and have the risk of ultra fast charging 1x or 2x cells.

1x or 2× 30Qs might be fine, but NCR18650GAs will get absolutely demolished.

Its the host that I want to be “special”, not the guts. Something besides aluminum, preferably. I mean I guess I could order up a standard host, strip the ano and re-anodize it in some funky color, that might be fun. Eh, we’ll see…

Why not just clear anodize it then?

If you have a power supply and some dilute sulfuric acid, that is easy as pie.

Or you could go for a zinc look with a dilute solution of sodium hydroxide and zinc oxide.

Odd, I find the D18 to be pretty special as is. The craftsmanship alone sets it apart from most manufacturers. I don’t mind alternative materials but the fact you can tint mix makes it pretty custom already.

hey I bet all of you know skylumen so he sells this light with osram white with 6x white 1 and 12 white2 on the outer.. SO here is my question.. could it be possible to program the light to turn off the 12 leds on the outer ring to not flood out too much.. then turn off the center for less throw.. and third mode all the lights for max performance?

what could be one of the best led options for the d18 for floody or just remove the 12 outer clear lenses and replace with frosted instead

Yea if you want some combo beam it’s better to have wider/frosted TIR on some of them. Maybe even just every other outer lens. Up to you

Has anyone tried the 3000k + 4000k mix? What are your feelings about this mix?

I did this mix on my M43 but I used Bluesword LEDs that have lower DUV value. The result is amazing at all levels! Highly recommend it.

I tried it and although it looks much better than the greenish 4000k on its own that Emisar uses, it is still not rosy. I think if Emisar sourced the rosy 2700k that Fireflies was using and a rosier binned 4000k, the mixture could result in a very nice rosy tint.

Has anyone done any lumen measurements with the D18 yet? Maukka?

In my quasi-calibrated sphere I get 15-18k lumens depending on the cells I use (brand new VTC6 and 30Q or older VTC6) with mine which has 5000k SST-20s.

The VTC6 are clearly more powerful but just wondering if it’s likely this light is putting out slightly more than the claimed 14k.
