I am still missing a classical penlight in my arsenal and I have put off buying one for quiet some time now. I have seen that there are a few new players in town.
The Preon 2 seems to be very nice indeed and has gotten great reviews , but is more on the expensive side with $45-discount
1920 pelican is rated with 67 Lumen by it's manufacturer
I want to avoid the sub $8 range as I hadn't good luck with them in the past, besides the SIpik SK68 of course.
The Terralux is a very interesting light with 80 Lumen and high CRI emitter... I have to look for reviews on that... also the price is nice ... at least in the US. The cheapest I could find for an European distributor was Amazon UK with ~18 GBP shipped ($28, €22) The bite grip is a clever idea imho.
It gets black if you cook it long enough. ;-) Kokopelli also has a terra on its way. I hope you both get good ones... I was put off a little by some mixed reports about them. So I did the next logical thing and bought the light with virtually no real reviews on this planet... I guess I will never learn.
I had a TerraLUX LightStar 80 and everyone at work was so impressed with it that several people bought one. It's NOT 80 lumens, not by a long shot. I would put it dead even with the similarly sized Streamlight at 40 lumens.
However, I had a Streamlight Stylus Pro also (new version, 40 lumens) and it was so green that I gave it away. Horrible color. The TerraLUX has an amazing neutral white color. It's a really nice light.
Both, the Streamlight and TerraLUX, use the Cree XP-C emitter.
To me, the Terralux Lightstar 80 looks like 50 lumens. I really like the color tint of the High CRI LED. I don't like the sharp edges on the front of this light.
I have been buying and carrying penlights for work. Over the past year i have tried three of the better ones on the market in the $20-30 range. The Streamlight Stylus Pro, the Terra Lux Lightstar 80 and the Pelican 1920.
The Stylus is a really good go to light and i recommend it for people who just want a good penlight. The Pelican is my current EDC and fav. It is slightly heavier and thicker than the Pro but not so much that i notice. It is brighter and has a nice tint. Good lite for sure.
The Terra Lux was a bit of a dissapointment to me. It has a sickly yellow tint that was just too much. I work around electronics and wires and i didnt think it had better color rendering than a warm white tint. It was sooooo yellow that it skewed everything that way.
Short answer, the Pro or the Pelican are both grewt penlights.
I am more than happy with my Fenix LD05 although it is a bit heavier than a Preon II. Has a nice white tint and three well balanced modes. PWM is a bit annoying, though.
Have you guys tried Eagletac’s penlight PN20a2? It also looks like a powerful and strong light to have.
The ICON Solo has been my penlight for a few years now. It's a solid, well build light. The only peeve I have with it is that the anti-roll bevels on the head make it a bit chunky. Other than that, it's great.
I love my E06 I have bee using it for over a year with either 2 Duraloops or one 10440. It's a great little light I can't say enough nice things about it. I also have this clip for it which makes it a thousand times more useful.
