Lots of solid wood furniture spam lately, it seems like they have set up a bot to regularly register, change the signature and make a new thread automatically.
Maybe changing the questions in the registration page could help?
I try to do my duty to the site by allowing the ads every now and then and clicking everything, but ordinarily I try ā with everything I read online ā to clean up pages to remove distractions and repetitive material and focus on whatās new and interesting.
(This is why I block ads ā so I CAN willingly buy things that I want, because if something has been pushed in my face repeatedly, on principle, I wonāt buy it).
This is just me. No offense or criticism to those who like to have a lot of familiar decoration or restatement of principle, etc., on everything they post.
I can block repeating pictures with UBlock Element successfully.
I can block an entire picture hosting site if itās used for a large number of images that repeat, whether in signatures or in repeated requoting
I can unblock a unique picture in a response that I want to see.
But, I havenāt figured out a way to choose to block large volume signature lines that repeat every time.
I thought UBlock would do that but havenāt gotten it to work.
No offense, mind you. I know those big proclamations are the kind of thing liked by people who like that kind of thing and like others to see them often.
But for me itās like advertising. If itās being pushed in my face I avoid it.
Your mileage will undoubtedly vary, because human beings are wonderfully diverse.
But āyou canāt have everything, where would you put it?ā is not a limit online, unless you set your own limits.
I havenāt figured out a way to do that. Any help welcome.
P.S. ā if anyone wants everyone to have access to a big block of material in a signature, without having it appear full text with every comment you make, there is a way.
Notice mine? I found that cute phrase in someoneās very technical query here long ago.
So I attached the URL link to the comment behind the words, so the signature is one clickable line of text there.
If anyone wants to know more about that signature line, clicking it takes them to the source. You can link whatever volume of text you want that way.
Hypertext ā itās a good idea.
I donāt know where or on what forum I read it, but many years ago it was said that a members sig should always contain less lines than their shortest posts. Therefore if someoneās sig contained 7 lines, their posts must contain at least 7 lines of text, but it had to be quality text.
I guess (hope) I would be safe if this was a BLF rule, no lines of sig means my posts donāt have to contain quality text, right?
so, I made my signature point to the comment above about why it doesnāt work any more, hmmm, I wonder if Google or the Internet Archive has a cached copy of that missing post ā¦.
You can do it with a CSS override, same as the site theme I made. However, itās all very manual and canāt be triggered on a āsig too longā condition. Instead, you can hide signatures on a per-user basis or a per-content-type basis. If three peopleās sigs bother you, you can hide only theirs. Or if you want to block all images in signatures, you can do that. Or perhaps all tables in signatures.
TK, I understand the CS for blocking images in signatures (thank you)
What Iād still like to do is block text in signatures (selectively if possible, and blocking multiline/verbose specifically if possible)
I know at some point I just teach myself what to ignore. But if thereās a tool, that frees up a few brain cells otherwise used just to filter my own visual input
EDIT ā tkās code for that works fine, and is posted in the BLF After Dark thread
