Hi all
There have been so many reviews on these two lights so i decided just doing beam shot comparison to see how they perform with Convoy L6 and discussion to the driver modification.
I got myself two Thorfire S70S because I love Convoy L6 so much but it seems that there are some good features on S70s which L6 lack of terms of batery indicator and shoulder strap. The light specification can be found on Amazon link Thorfire S70S
Below are sets of beam shots i have done in comparison.
Location 1 control shot (Manual camera setting and the parameters are the same for all shots)
Distance for beamshot measured 156m which is equivalent to 513 feet
Looking at the beam shots I’m guessing Thorfire S70S is about 6000k which is a bit cooler than Convoy L6 (5000K).
Thorfire S70S (upgraded version) beam shot
Convoy L6 (modified with R100) beamshot
Convoy L6 (stock light)
Beamshots combined
My Convoy L6 tint rated 5000K whereas Thorfire S70s tint is unknown and I would of guess around 6000K base on the beamshot. Thorfire S70S seems to beat stock light Convoy L6 from the beamshots comparison based area its lid up also the throw.
The warm tint is more pleasing to your eyes and it tends to saturate the tree colour abit more compare to cool tint which gives you the impression it it more lumens but it’s not
Reflector comparison. Left side is S70S and right side is L6 so theoretical S70S should throw abit more than L6
S70S base reflector is approximately 2.44cm
Whereas L6 is 2.7cm
Both have same diameter at the front
Thorfire S70S – no anti reflective coat
Convoy L6 – with anti reflective coat (purple tint)
Side by side
Standing alone
Reflector textures
S70S stacking R100 resistor on top of R080
So far I can say the new driver is excellent as it can pump turbo for 5 minutes then step down to the mode below. The temperature measured 0 to 5 minutes peak at an average of 43 degrees then it remain regulate about 50 degrees for the next 30 minutes running. I can comfortably hold the light at this temperature maybe my skin is thick and i’m not sure if other people have issues holding.
The mod S70S reached about 50 degree from 0 to 5 minutes and I noticed it’s brighter than stock light. It then step down the mode below at 5 minutes and the temperature stable around 56 degrees. I need to do more testing to see how it performs and more long distance beam shots coming soon so stay tune
I will post more beam shots at longer distance next couple of days modified L6 Vs modified S70S, some lux reading, temperature graph, current measure
Things I like Thorfire to improve:
- Anti reflective coat to the lense to get more lumens out
- More tint selection for the LEDs especially warm tint people on this forum love
- Better quality control ( i did pick up some minor issues and it’s easily fix but some consumer won’t be able to fix)
- I prefer stainless steel bezel like older version to avoid damage
- Redesign the light to make it sexy like L6
Ps im new here so be nice me

Both lights with batteries LiitoKala 26650 5000mAh 20A
Temperature measuring points for both lights
Temperature reading for Thorfire S70S (stock light) on turbo mode
lovely temperature regulation at 5 minutes
Temperature reading for Convoy L6 (stock light) on turbo mode
The temperature continuing climbing up and I stopped the test to avoid damage. At 65 degrees it felt burn to my hand holding the light which is not usable at all.
This graph im comparing the hotest point (deep fin) on both lights to see how it perfom
From the result I also analysed the temperature difference on the extreme ends ( tail area vs deep fin) to see how efficient the heat transfer throughout the body and the winner to go Thorfire S70S
Link to my excel file if you want to play around the data / graph

i will conduct other tests next few days as I’m busy with other commitments.
Also mod L6 Vs mod S70s
Stay tune for more
Nico -.-
Thanks for this, the Thorfire is my favorit.
Thanks MILSPEC
i like both lights
L6 is more sexier whereas S70S have more features and performance
Nico -.-
Nice
Can you measure temps of the Convoy too?

Sorry grammarlovers, I am a real King Typo.
ok i will measure the temperature to stock light L6, modified L6 and modified S70S tomorrow.
Nico -.-
In room temp without cooling the handle on my L6 gets up to 70 degrees in 20 minutes. Haven’t measured any further to avoid damage to the batteries. The head got to 75°C.
I didn’t realise you live next to me lol. I remember you told me but I thought you where joking. Where the gates around the loop closed? To many goofs hang out there. you should go to headland where the golf course is.
When I tested the L6 I went to kernell behind the refinary. No people at all.

is that the stock light L6 (no driver modification) you measured Maukka?
70 degrees is definitely hot to hold and seems unsafe for battery too.
Nico -.-
Yeah i dont live far from you everydaysurvivalgear.
Lots of trouble makers at this location aspecially at night and i was lucky enough the cops were around the corner that night.
I will find another location for longer beam shots.
Nico -.-
Yes, bone stock with Liitokalas and the 3A tint.
very good comparison!! Thank you
OK so when you are measuring, turn the S70S on at the same time, when it steps down, just put the L6 in high for a better comparison.

Good info, thanks for the review!
Great info. Looking forward to quantitative measurements as you mentioned (lux, temp, current)
I can’t wait to receive my s70s in the mail…
I added the temperature analysis graphs.
Please note that I bought these lights with my money and i didn’t want to measure to the extreme point as i’m afraid it will damage.
i will do further testing with time as i have personal commitments and i hope this help others looking to get one
Nico -.-
Nice, thanks!

Thanks for testing. At least Convoy does state that the light shouldn’t be left unattended on turbo for extended periods (“never turn on the turbo mode all the time”). When you’re holding it, it’s very clear when you should switch to a lower output.
Thorfire S70S have good temperature regulation and Im comfortable to hold the light at 50 degrees.
i will test long distance beam shoots mod L6 vs mod S70S next couple of days to see how they perform in real life
Nico -.-
Nicolicous, thanks for posting this. I’m now more tempted to get the S70S after reading your review
we buy light for a brighter tomorrow
Wait, thorfire’s lens is not AR coated? Too bad
Forgot my pen
Great comparison!
Thank you!
Awesome work!! thanks.
My flashlight + watch reviews... enjoy!!
we talking 70 deg Celsius here right ?
Nice work, thanks!
Both lights are very good for me.
Yes
50°C is about the max for metal to be held, maybe 55°C for those used to heat or “tough” hands, 70°C feels burning hot and might cause burns on skin

One thing you didn’t mention, but is important, is how the lights operate.
The old S70 used to function just like the L6, which is on and off from the tail switch and the side switch changed modes.
The new S70s no longer turns on with the tail switch. It’s more of a lockout now. You turn it on as well as change modes with the side switch.
So for people who are on the fence about which to get, keep that in mind. The L6 has the forward clicky and you can blink it, tactical style. The S70s can’t, but you CAN hold it more comfortably in the middle of the light with one hand and turn it on and off.
So the new user interface has its pro’s and cons.
Oh yeah, the S70s is currently on sale for about $40.

That’s too good of a deal to turn down, although I’m only seeing $2 off, not $13 off like you’re getting.
Currently S70 is on a win side: great price, better finnish, better oxidation and it has a carrying strap: something crusial for a light that big
Plus, a spare glass ( other spares too) and a illuminated button, also crusial for a side button based light
The one thing that Thorfire should improove is their customer support- simply there is none.
SImon on the other hand is quite helpful. The clear L6 looks awful, but thats a matter of personal taste
Tint options, Convoy is awesome in that department
