I know there are challenges with getting a signal through that much water so maybe you could argue that beacons for that depth are not useful. I just can’t believe they don’t even have something for the scenario that they surfaced and were stuck inside though. Surely a radio would be a good idea in that scenario?? ![]()
Yeah, if I ever get a PS5, I’ll probably use a PS5 controller with my PC. ![]()
Right now I use a PS4 controller if I play a PC game, but sometimes the PS4 controller disconnects when I’m using it.
(It might be because of my Bluetooth network adapter.) ![]()
The more I’m reading about that sub, the more I’m thinking of those “Build your own submarine!” offers that used to be in the back of comic books.
Valid points. I’d still rather something simpler and vastly more robust, like one would expect to see in any other well-engineered piece of marine hardware.
As I understand it you need really long wavelengths to transmit through any significant distance of water. ELF is used by some navies, however the antennas are enormous.
I gather that OceanGate was using sonar pulses for text messaging between the support ship and the submersible.
I would have said the human element. That includes all the choices made up to the point of this screw up. These things are usually a cascade effect - something that started long before the trip. For example, I wonder if they did psych evaluations on the clients? Imagine being in a tiny room with others and someone goes ballistic
With the Sea Monkeys.
Awww, man, anyone else hear this? The CEO refused to hire “experienced 50yo white guys” in favor of inexperienced but “inspirational” 25yo kids instead.
Sooooo, the kind of experience you need to keep, say, control systems from self-destructing under extreme pressure and corrosive saltwater, redundant safe systems, etc. You know, the kind of stuff that keeps people from, like, dying.
Maybe that’s why they used off-the-shelf game controllers for the damned thing. It was a sub going almost 3mi underwater with zero support or rescue possible at those depths, not a 100buk drone to fly around the neighborhood. Truly “inspirational”…
Yep, just read that too. Stupidity is a MF.
In Wikipedia, the thickness of the fiberglass cylinder is given as 127 mm. I don’t know to what extent this is sufficient for the prevailing pressures below, but I consider the choice of material alone to be unsuitable, especially since the shape also seems unsuitable for deep-sea submersibles (for such things, one primarily takes spheres since they are simply the most stable, at least with the bathysphere built so far).
Allegedly, the built-in window is only approved/certified for depths up to 1300 m. Whether this is true, no idea. If this is the case, a sudden structural failure of the window or the frame could also be a cause. I am at least relatively sure that the submersible suddenly imploded, at whatever point… (Which unfortunately means the death sentence for the passengers, inevitably).
What also makes me personally wonder is that so far it seems impossible to find the submersible at all. Sure there are underwater currents in and around the wreck of the Titanic and the submersible is not big, but honestly: can the submersible drift so far that it is impossible to locate it? I would have located the submersible somewhere within a radius of 2-4 km around the Titanic since the location/coordinates of the Titanic wreck site are well known…
What the CEO actually said is that he didn’t necessarily need or want people with military experience, which is the common practice in submersible design. He did not say he wanted people without the relevant and adequate experience designing the vessel. He said folks younger than the typical 50-year-olds usually hired could provide valuable innovation and up to date skills.
Well, that doesn’t really inspire trust, does it.
What CEO is actually said is he will not hire white 50 y.o. ex navy guys, notice that he specified white guys. sounds like racisms to me. woke mentality.
But yea, there are plenty of 25y.o. guys with decades of real submarine experience, as well as sub design skills,… lol, no there aren’t.
From what i see around me, vast majority of 25 y.o. care more about video games, and smoking pot.
I do feel bad about 4 guys on board, my condolences to their families.
It’s not racism, it’s “innovation”. He literally said that.
The kind of innovation that cuts corners and certifications and saves a lot of money. Won’t let some stupid security specifications stand in the way of profit, would we.
It absolutely is, when you exclude a group based on race, it MOST CERTANLY IS RACISM. Innovation my a$$,
I’ve been watching some interviews from people who went on it.
It’s been said only something like 1/4 trips actually make it to see the titanic.
Problems on every trip.
This is very ‘f around, find out’
The CEO said he wanted to hire young people to help inspire the next generation to get into the field. I heard a quote where he said the old white guys weren’t going to inspire a 16yr old to get into the field. I question that logic, but whatever. Seems like you should still have at least one of those guys with years of navy experience around to supervise. Why not have your cake and eat it too?
Maybe he was lying about the motivation and the real reason is that the experienced guys wouldn’t work for low enough pay, or put up with the dangerous practices of his company.
well, if he never said white, i would agree, but he did singled out one race, my guess to please the woke crowd, well , go woke go broke, in his case dead.
The whole idea of bringing unexperienced kids to be responsible for one of most dangerous trips in the world, because it inspires someone, lmao, sure. did this moron actually think people who have 250k to spare would be inspired by an unexperienced kid taking them 4 miles down??? Well it worked out exactly how it would with his approach. I guess it inspires someone.
The CEO never said he would not hire anyone of any single race. And he never said he was considering people without adequate experience in the relevant fields.
The guy is in really dire straits, or deceased after a terrible experience. And he no doubt felt responsibility for the fate of the other four on board. Let’s try not to put words in his mouth that he didn’t actually speak.
Of course he did pretty loud and clear. stop defending racism,
Not only he wont hire whites, he also wont hire 50 year olds, so he discriminated twice.
Debris field discovered.
