A Very Unusual Folding Knife

I was searching through boxes looking for something and came across this Benchmade folder I had forgotten about.

Its a large folder designed by Rod Steigerwalt.

What makes this folder so unusual, is that when it is unfolded, the blade is one and one half inches longer than the handle.

The tip of the blade seats in a tang that retracts inside the handle when it's opened. When the blade is being closed, the tang re-emerges and seats itself.

Its its really neat to have a very large blade without an equally large handle.

I can't remember where I bought it, but it's a pre production Prototype.

You don't come across these very often.

I just thought I'd share this with you.

Very cool knife, I’ve never seen anything like it.

Oooh nice. That’s a really interesting design and I’ve never seen anything like that. Must be nice to have such a nice collection that you would lose a knife like that

I’m about to stop buying flashlights for a while and go back to knives for a while. Almost bought a Benchmade Bushcraft fixed blade knife today but I got the Tops BOB instead. Still don’t own a Benchmade but that will probably change soon.

Here’s the Tops knife I bought today, which seems comparable or maybe a little better than its Benchmade counterpart:

wow, that is something you don’t see everyday.

thanks for sharing.

I’ve never bought any fixed blades except for some filleting knives, and some neck knives.
I’ve always had my eye on an Esee though.

ooh that’s nice… but it’s illegal to carry as the blade is over 4” (?) :~

There aren’t any knife laws in Canada except for maybe auto knives and such. You can’t skin a moose with a three inch blade.
I think it’s more up to the Police to decide arbitrarily. If you’re part of a disturbance in the entertainment district at three in the morning and carrying ten inch filleting knife, you better be able to show them your salmon.

I feel very afraid right now, cant skin a Moose, I like my skin.

The knife laws here in Aus are really strict as well. The biggest hassle is they cannot be opened one handed or be assisted in opening.

Seriously though, i really wanna get my hands on something like this. I’m in Texas, we pay by the Crocodile Dundee rules!

Thats a cool set up.

Im in…

…wait, this is not a give away?

Quirky knife.

Is the blade straight or does it have a slight recurve to it? Some of the pics look like its got a slight curve, others look like its straight.

I’m loving the blade shape, I wish my 710 had that exact blade. Very cool knife, never sell it man, even if you never carry it still that’s something you hang onto, you don’t happen to ha a child born in ’06 do you? That would be perfect if you did, something you could pass on to them.
My Sebenza is from the same month my son was born (4/12). It’s my EDC so it won’t be pristine but one day my son will get it along with one of a set of three knives my dad gave me, one for him, one for me and one for my son.

Needs to buy !

My blade is a straightedge. No recurve. I didn’t really look closely at the video. Mine is a pre-production prototype, but I don’t think they changed the blade for the commercial production.
This is a big blade. My pictures or the video don’t really portray how big it is.

That’s a very unusual design, beautifully executed. I like that a lot.

I’ve either seen this or a similar knife awhile ago. Definitely not something everyone would like due to it’s size alone.

Found it on the Benchmade site.

I wonder what your prototype’s value is. Probably $$$ to a prototype collector. Nice design. What is the slide out tailpiece made from?

If you read on the Benchmade site, it says discontinued.
I bought my prototype on eBay. Nobody bid on it, so I paid about the same price as the stock production models were selling for at the time. (Under $100)

I just checked eBay, and there is a prototype exactly like mine. They’re asking $250.

It’s made out of zytel.

I know this knife may look quirky, but it’s the real deal. Nothing Micky Mouse about it. It is solid and big. The mechanism is first rate. You really have to hold it in your hand to understand.

Ouchy,

Yeah, I forgot to mention the 13220 is a discontinued model. Does Benchmade make a similar knife today?

On a totally different note, have you looked at the many different locking mechanisms used by Benchmade?
