I installed mine about a week and a half ago and for the high traffic bathroom, that one is ready for a charge.
Yeh, one of the early ones I got was a set of 2. #1 worked perfectly, still does, got it by the catbox. #2 would turn on then off when first powered up, as expected, but subsequently with motion would turn on then stay on forever. No-go, figured Iād pull the cell and hardwire it to the usb port and make it powered-only.
Thereās the panel with diffusion film and a few other layers, which is edge-lit by a āstickā of LEDs that runs along the side. Underneath is a pouch cell, about the size of a Bazooka bubblegum. Teeny board for the usb/pir/switches.
Somebody here is going to be in a crazy enough mood to want to try thisā¦ $7.99
What LB said about the design. Iāve had several apart and they are generally similar, but some are more adaptable for external batteries than others. I like the form factor but the batteries are generally poor in capacity and longevity, especially if used in a higher traffic area.
Iāve got 2 Iām looking at I tested directly (not via USB), AFTER being used. One is 4" long, 1100mAh spec, tested at 1250-surprise!
The other is 6" long, 1500mAh spec, tested at 650. Quality is all over the map with these.
I have one in my hall stairs wired to an external 4P pack. It lasts a long time now.
I also pulled the led strip, without electronics, out of another and hard wired it to a wall wart of appropriate voltage and itās an effective always on light under a basement shelf. Pulls ~ 0.5W.
Thanks for the info.
Reading the reviews for these sorts of things itās apparent the batteries are hit or miss on capacity and longevity.
Iāve seen a variant of these on Amazon that come with a remote to control functions. Might be more usefull in some settings.
You notice any PWM when itās dimmed down to lower brightness settings?
I and crappy PWM donāt get along. Iām one of those who is more sensitive to it.
All the Best,
Jeff
I donāt, but Iām not sensitive and donāt check. Except for one of the larger ones I got they donāt dim. One batch will allow color changeā¦maybe, if you are lucky. Setting controls on that particular model is pretty lame.
Got 4 of the Stranger Things lights in.
Unlike some who had damaged boxes - mine were OK.
All the batts were at 1.6+ volts. So new D cells.
One of the boxes was taped up with white blank label looking thingies.
Another had an Amazon sticker on the top with inventory info and the word: āNewā on the Amazon label. All the lights were clean and looked new to me.
The lights in their boxes came in box with no padding. Tight fit in the shipping box kept them from getting buggered up.
Itās darned near impossible to remove the light from itās box without tearing up the interior cardboard. Itās the really cheap stuff. The batteries are sort of just tucked into the box.
All the switches were in the āOnā mode. Guess they got tested before boxing.
All metal except for the switch and the guts. Not nearly Maglight thick. Feels soft. I 'm sure it will dent or ding if dropped. Think if I was my younger self I could crush the tube some with my hands.
Two things keep this from being the perfect granny/kid light.
The button is kind of hard to push for weak hands, but it can be done. Kids, depending on age, should have no problem.
The biggest problem for gran as well as kids -
Itās darned near impossible to start putting on the threaded end cap without it trying to cross-thread. The rear spring must be overcome to start the threads. Yaā gotta PUSH!
All of them were like this. The threads are sharp cut and finer than average.
The old timey lights had more āblank spaceā before the threads started to line things up. Coarser threads helped also.
Better keep some lube on them. I can see them seizing up if screwed on too tight due to the soft identical metals.
The 150Lm seems about right. Havenāt measured it. Should be safe enough for all concerned if the kids are a little responsibleā¦
Beam is just fine. Could be a bit wider in the hotspot.
Anyhow thatās my two cents - or $10.67 or whatever it was.
What the heck. Still like them at this price for the novelty.
For gran, who is going to put it in a drawer perhaps a couple of AA to D converters with Eneloops inside. Ds seem to be better at not puking their guts up than the little guys.
All the Best,
Jeff
Just received mine and ordered three more. Very nice light ā¦ especially at $10.00 each. I am very pleased ā¦

Yeah, if this deal had bin around before Christmas, Iād be the favorite Santa in the under 13 crowdā¦
I can never show this light to my teens!
Okay, maybe I missed something. So what exactly is the appeal of that light? Does it turn into a lightsaber to kill the Degronomigons or something?
Stranger Things (retro flashlight) is back and here is a BLF thread on it from May.
Thatās it? Itās a 1-mode retro-looking granny-light?
Gotta admit, thatās pretty funny. In the āwhat would be a good granny-light?ā threads, everyone and his grandmother (har!) wants to sneak in Li cells and usb charging, multiple modes, etc., and hereās The granny-light, and non-grannies are going gaga over it and scooping 'em up by the dozen.
I think the best granny light for a real granny is choosing a favorite top-condition 1960s or 70s 2-cell D or AA light with an after-market led replacement bulb, or one of each.
After reading saltyboi6704 mod thread about the Stranger Things lightā¦
This thing is even cheaper and more poorly constructed than I thought.
I guess if they can sell it for ten bucks and pay some kind of license to the show and still make a profit - What did I expect?
Drop it - itās gonna break and maybe puck its guts out the front.
The end cap threads are really shallow.
The switch button is large - But only a smaller center portion actually moves. An adult sized finger covers too much of the button to push it.
Ya gotta push it with a finger tip (sortāa) to turn it on.
LB - the appeal is like having a Roy Rogers cap gun or other such stuff.
Yep, just a dolled up cheap single mode, straight from the battery light with nothing other than the switch as āregulationā.
This, I think, is the granny light to beat. 2 (1)xD Flashlights. For $19.85
One for the bedroom. One for the kitchen.
Gran isnāt going to be needing to light the world. She needs to find the whatāits dropped under the bed or make a pee run with the power out.

Eveready General Purpose LED Flashlight 2 Pack EVEL152S - The Home Depot
brad is right - hard to find a modern light with the same construction values as the old ones. Iāve got 50 year old lights that still work just fine.
One another note. I picked up my old 4xD maglite and went āHoly Sh!!ā this thing still has batteries in it. No idea how long since I touched it.
With a great deal of unease, I hit the switch. On it came with a strong beam.
With even more trepidation - I opened it.
Out came 4 Copper-tops with 2007(!) dates. Not a leak in sight.
Dodged a big bullet this time!
Al the Best,
Jeff
Yeah, Ds and Cs leak waaaaaaaay less than those hateful spiteful little AAs and especially AAAs, which seem to come out of the package pre-leaking to save time.
Especially the ancient ones would survive the best, because constant and rapidly accelerating quality-fade ever cheapens the makeup of alkaleaks. Fresh ones today are shiiteier than those of 10- and especially 20yrs ago.
Iām waiting for the 4 Ds in this cat-toy to fizzle out before I stick in those 1.5V rechargeables.
I used to run that quite a while, but The Holy Terror goes after the ābirdā (clump of featherlike things) with a murderous vengeance, so I have to watch him the entire time.
Anyhoo, the lightās probably is intended to be disposable toy for fans of the show, I guess.
Oh, I was gonna add, my old man had a Dorcy flashlight that was completely entombed in rubber. Like, drop that sucker and itād bounce. I still got it here somewhere 'though encrusted with shiite because it was, umm, well-used.
I was gonna drop in a Nite-Ize blub replacement to be brighter and have longer runtime but he wasnāt interested. Oh well.
Yep, the lights arenāt really deburred properly and made of very thin aluminium. Itās a reproduction of the original Eveready Union Carbide Chrome 2D torch but made with cheap manufacturing methods in mind. There is enough thermal mass for a 6V8A driver to work in there if you heatsink the LED effectively (in this case it was a 15mm thick brass pill I attached with some metal epoxy)
Project Farm just did video on non-stick fry-pans.
A clear standout was the Granitestone. Better non-stick and more wear resistant than the high dollar brands.
Just 20 bucks for the 10" currently.
It will go up once all the PF viewers jump on it.

It comes in three sizes, and I got the small one.
