I believe we have moved on to something that is better than the old site when EVERYTHING is considered. By everything, I include the the toil that none of the users of BLF would be aware of. The amount of āhidden from public viewā time and effort that was being spent on keeping the rickety old outdated software running so that the average viewer had a great experience was significant. In past years I have seen the underbelly of what can be required to make an old system continue to function long after it should have been put to rest. Not this site but a few others, some my own and some at places that employed me going back 40+ years. (I am not an IT person, but did have a close relationship with systems under development when the IBM PC was first released. For a time I did pursue IT work as a career, but gave it up for the personal comfort of working with wood.)
Changes can be difficult to become used to. Some changes that are made just because somebody could make a change are very annoying. Changes here were an absolute must in order to make our beloved sbās life less stressful.
I was not the happiest of users here for the first couple of days. I find changes more distressing than many, or so I thought until I saw some comments here. It took me some time to learn how to do some things. Possibly longer than it took me 40 years ago. I did a lot of poking, clicking, and some reading before eventually being rewarded with a sense of satisfaction.
Thatās my experience; others may be having better or worse personal experiences. And I do not think there is any one item/system that makes everyone ecstatically happy all the time.
So, I am happy that sb made this change. It might have been less work and stress for him to simply call it a day and pull the plug.
Web sites should be optimized based on operating system, screen size, web browser, etc.
The end user (us) should not have to anything other than enjoy the content.
Prefacing that I have no idea what it takes for a website designer or administrator to make every end-user happy, and also not knowing the number of variables for which to account, is it even possible to make a forum website look good, easy to navigate, setup, and use for everyone, without the need for some individual adaptation? Is it not inevitable that no matter how much time, effort & investment is incorporated into the layout and functionality, that some users will simply be put off and not return?
Itās just fine. Anybody who does not like it, should ask for a refund⦠BTW, this seems like a good time to thank you for providing a place for people like us. It is appreciated greatly. And The Dark mode is great.
Yup, I like it here at BLF.
I like learning about flashlights.
I donāt like CPF or Reddit, and thereās not a whole lot of other big forums for flashlight discussions in English on the web.
If sb didnāt create BLF, maybe I wouldnāt be such a flashaholic, and thatās one addiction that I donāt mind having.
One thing I have not found here in the new playspace is āUsers on the forum nowā
or whatever that was called.
Whoās in the room?
Is a user in the thread online now???
Didnāt have to click on things to see this in the past, how is this progress?
This was useful if someone I wanted to talk to in realtime was online at the same time it made me stick around.
No itās like walking in the dark, without a flashlight
Hi there, this functionality is available as a plugin.
It should be noted that the old forum had no concept of a user being āonlineā or not. It simply put a green light next to their name if they had logged in during the past 10 minutes or something like that. Now with the current software that functionality could be installed, and also itās technically already available by clicking on the userās avatar:
At the bottom of the thread there is also an indicator if any user(s) are currently typing a reply. The same goes for private messages, and they will also refresh like an instant message without reloading the page.
So I have the flashlight, and I do love it, but I think Iāll wait maybe a week to write the review.
The flashlight is the largest by volume and by weight for any flashlight that I have tried to EDC.
I want to see if I get used to the size of the flashlight or not.
I also havenāt tried out the holster that I bought for this flashlight because the flashlight fits in my pocket, but just barely.
I should at least try out the holster and see if I like it more than just putting the flashlight in my pocket.
Also, instead of doing my usual review, I think Iāll do a comparison of my best three throwers, all of which are made by Convoy.
They all have their pros and cons, and each excels in a different category.
Honestly, any of the three would be a good choice for an EDC (for me), but in my upcoming comparison thread, Iāll reveal which one I like most and why.
Every you click in a thread it sents you where you left it, or if there are new posts it sents you in the first unreaded ! Plus you can make some changes with the āTopic Controlā and the āTrackingā opinionsā¦
Unfortunately, too many options on this new forum for my taste. Confusing and over complicated for what should be a simple thing like a forum. But other members seem to like it, so the problem must be on my side.
An annoyance is how jumpy the site is on mobile (iPhone).
After you swipe up while reading a thread, you will notice the top topic bar and the bottom right 3/17 will shift after a moment. Thatās two distraction for your eye and brain to process while reading.
Im quite new on the forum in general and i wasnāt long enough in the previous format, but i think that the new format its way better⦠! Simple you just havenāt get to use on the new one yet⦠! Just my opinion⦠!
