All cells in series, nearly for sure it uses a buck driver. Should work nicely with NiMH cells, although it's a brick anyway.

For years Costco has sold a 3-pack of duracell lights for around $19 and they frequently discount them down to $14.
Would be nice to find one of these thats suitable for modding and installing a custom driver and LED inside
