Just like Felix in that “Odd Couple” episode…
By the time you figure out what time it is, you’re already late for work.
I’ve worn a watch since I was 5 years old. I am not someone who ‘loses track of time.’ I have analog wall clocks in my home, too.
I don’t carry a phone around with me, so it doesn’t make a watch obsolete for me.
I mostly wear my fitness watch to track my exercise routine and heart rate.
I agree, watches have become somewhat obsolete.
My go-to digital watch these days is a CASIO G-Shock GD-350. I have 2 of them. One is a negative display model, the original with the “VIBRATOR” label (after 1 production run, they switched to “VIBE ALARM”). My other GD-350 is a positive display with the light-blue lettering on the bezel. These watches are bulky, but they’re terrific–easy to use with large buttons. Excellent easily seen LED backlight. There’s a quick launch for the CDT. But the best feature is vibration. I find most digital alarms are too faint to be heard in anything other than a really quiet room.
This is my “cooking” watch. I set the CDT to 4 minutes. It’s an excellent segment of time that I find very useful for cooking. Especially when outdoor grilling.
I usually wear a watch all the time except sleeping or showering, it’s so much more convenient to just glance at my wrist than it is to get my phone out and wake it up. Plus my phone tends to stay in my pocket unless it actually rings and when I’m at home I regularly put it down somewhere and then leave it there so it’s not always with me.
Been wearing my CWC for the last couple of years.
I got cats. 30sec after I turn off the light to go to sleep, they all wake up, and it’s Time To Play (ie, run around the house full-speed and jumping on things like idiots).
I miss my old Nokia monochrome-screen candybar phones. Display was always active with the time. Color screen was always black unless you’d light it up. Smartphones, you gotta do a 30sec ritual just to see the micro-time on the screen up-top.
So much for “progress”…
Whenever I wore a watch, I’d always be banging it on something. Just resting my arm on a desk would press it into my wrist. After not wearing watches for a while, wearing one just became generally uncomfortable.
Really did love that ol’ Casio with the SS body/bezel. Wore that 'til it was so worn/scuffed/scratched it looked like bobofett’s helmet, but it kept on ticking (yeah yeah, that’s Timex, but…).
I use my watch for grilling too. The difference between a rare and medium steak is only about a minute so my cheap Casio digital helps me keep track. I used to maintain pools and it helped with backwashes. I learned the hard way to slip the watch down to my hand past my thumb to remind me I’m in backwash mode and not drain the pool.
I miss my old LG LOTUS LX610. Tiny and thinnest flip-phone around. Looks like a mini notebook computer. It came out before Android so it missed having a good OS and lack of WiFi is crippling now, since 3G is dead. I can’t even set the time on it. But it makes a great backup alarm with its loud dual speakers. It has slowly gained time. Right now it’s just about 5 minutes fast, but when DST kicks in… you have to adjust the alarm clock time by an hour.
Couldn’t you have done a simple watch rotation? Face out when normal, face in (inside wrist) when backwashing?
I don’t know if I would have noticed that as easily. I had a flex band so slipping it past my thumb was easy to do and it made my left hand unusable until the watch was slid back up on the wrist. YMMV
Context is everything. Yeah, that makes sense.
Nice watch!
I have four of them–two with a positive display and two with a negative display.
What’s kinda strange is that the watches are from 2013, and they’re still Casio’s best vibration alarm watches in 2024.
I haven’t worn a watch in years either, and it’s only recently that I realized I don’t really miss it. I used to have a few, but the practicality of having my phone around made them feel unnecessary. That being said, I’ve always liked the style of watches, especially something like the Rolex GMT-Master – I’ve even checked out a few rolex gmt master clone just out of curiosity. While I can appreciate the craftsmanship, I think I’d feel too conscious wearing something that fancy every day. It’s cool to see how much people still value watches, though!
That statement did not age well.
Although the Casio GD350 is quite nice, the display of the Casio GBD200 is much better.
I like the user interface of the GD350 more, but overall I prefer my GBD200.
I am really a fan of the Citizen hybrid smartwatches. Battery life is around 18 DAYS! They are a little limited by their black and white displays but you get 90% smartwatch function and did I mention they only need to charge around 18 DAYS of use?
Wow, those replicas are not cheap!
Looks like they start at $300 and go up from there.
I’d rather wear a genuine Seiko than a fake Patek.
