*Anyone ever modded a Nitecore EC1??

I love my lil EC1 but I could use some more throw, in other words, this guy needs an XPG2 in there…bad!! What sort of improvement could be expected from a mod like this…and are there any other mods that would help? Heck, I can’t even figure out how to get the bezel out… :frowning:

Would love to know, I have a EA1 with an offset emitter, and as far as I can tell the only way in is though the bezel? I think some sort of 3 way tool to twist the bezel initially, then hopefully you have access?

I have a EA1 and its one of my few lights I haven’t been able to open (along with a few zebralights). I bought it after seeing just how much of a thrower it was for a AA light and for its simple to pick-up and use 2 button interface. I would love to reflow an XP-E2 in place of the R5 XP-G, even an XP-E should provide a tighter beam than the XP-G (not that the factory beam isn’t good as is but might as well take full advantage of the deep reflector)

Even XP-G2 makes a big difference, ‘ergotelis’ from CPF modded his EC2 and he got 9700lux/1m and 398 OTF lumens compared to 6800lux/1m and 315 OTF lm with stock XP-G.

Wow, that sounds like what I’m looking for! Apparently it can be done…you know if Nitecore was smart they’d already have the XPG2 version out.

I asked Nitecore about it and they are not going to update the emitter.

And that would be so easy for them to do. Look at the S10/20, pretty much all the Eagletacs, well, most other companies… Thanks for reporting!

I bought my ec1 from thailand about a month ago. My one came with a factory installed xpg2 in it. This little thrower is crazy bright but primary cr123 can’t handle it in turbo or high mode. The cell becomes hot after a minute or so on high.

Did it say ‘XPG2’ on the box? Maybe they will just quietly upgrade them as they go along? Thanks for the info!

I think there was a sticker on top of the box. I’m not sure sorry cant remember it clearly.

I don’t want to be rude but … are you sure it’s XP-G2?

Is the pcb of the emitter green like in this picture or is it white like on the second picture here

The emitter is xpg2. I will upload a photo

It really is XP-G2! I asked Nitecore about it on Facebook, I hope it’s not a one-off for Asian markets because I really can’t wait for EC2 with stock XP-G2. I’d buy one right away!

Yes, I’d replace the EC1 with an EC1-XPG2 in a heartbeat!

I wouldn’t mind modding one but it’s very dificult in Explorer series because of the bezel and weird heatsinking.

Yeah, I saw a thread somewhere where a guy drilled a hole in his EC1or2 to get the bezel off! Looked BAD, real bad. I don’t want in there THAT bad! :open_mouth:

Sometimes it’s enough when you just break the glass but you need spare lens which most people don’t have. Than there’s a weird emitter PCB (am I the only ont hinking that it doesn’t provide good heat dissipation?) so you would have to reflow the emitter. Quite a lot of work and it’s risky because it voids your warranty (which can be handy because sometimes Nitecore flashlights can be problematic).

PS. Guy who drilled a hole put Nichia high CRI instead od XP-G, stock flashlights with this emitter could be quite popular.

@rezwan
In which store did you buy your EC1?
