Beer Choices

Black Butte Porter may be the best American Porter (7 our of 10), but it doesn’t hold a candle to even the poorest Baltic Porters. I’m drinking a Black Boss (8.5 out of 10, less if it’s an older one) right now, but the Zweibick Porters (10 of 10) are the worlds best I’m convinced. Sorry to say I can only find them at rare moments. Everyone around here tends to drink IPA’s, so all of the idiot US beer makers try and make porters that are overhopped, similar to an IPA. One of the local stores is now stocking Black Boss, so I’m good for a while.

Have they never tasted a Baltic Porter? Anyhow, I’ve always liked Porters, but after trying 20- 30 USA made ones (which I disliked most every one), I learned that “Baltic Porter” is a beer category in and of itself. Turned out, I’m a “Baltic Porter” guy. Curious what others preferences are.

I’m neither picky, nor an aficionado, but I am partial to dark beers. My budget brew is Yuengling Black and Tan. When I’m out to eat I enjoy a good pour of Guinness if available. I read some reviews of your “Black Boss”. Sounds like something I’d be interested in sampling if I can find it.

I’ll usually drink any decent craft beer, not strongly picky, my usual floor is nice mass market beers (Stella, etc.).

Favourites, probably Elysian Space Dust, Hobgoblin (from the UK, try if if you ever see it in the US, it’s hard to find), and Arrogant Bastard Ale.

I like a nice IPA. Double IPA is even better, however my favorite so far is Hoptimum from Sierra Nevada which is a Triple IPA. Its a seasonal so it can be hard to find.

Black Butte Porter is the best American porter you can buy at a gas station.

Sierra Nevada, McSorleys, Sam Adams are some of my favorites.

I don’t drink much at all any more. My doctor told me I had a decision to make a few years ago. Stop drinking alcohol or start taking medications for the rest of my life.

I chose no meds, no beer. No meds = no side effects. But maybe once a week at most, we eat out at one of two local brewpubs and I have a glass of an on site brewed lager.

I chose the meds, probably not ideal but I don’t notice any side effects and its easier on your body to take a tablet or 2 everyday than drink a case or 2 everyday.

Alcohol is the only substance people use that requires you to consume so much of it. It’s kind of ridiculous. And nothing has a hangover that bad either, not even close. It takes a toll on your whole body. It’s really just not a good drug at all. Refreshing though. But so is ice tea

Caffeine > Alcohol

Alcohol = doze off in an armchair and accomplish nothing (for me anyway)
Caffeine = burst in productivity, enhanced reaction times

HEY ME TOO!
at least for now
i like to divide good/price instead of just asking ‘what is the best thing?’

i like to know what is the biggest bang for the buck

(and then see if i can actually stand it, or even like it
the yuengling B&T is pretty good, AND pretty cheap
sure guinness and bass ale makes a better one but it;s 1/5 the b/b ratio)

HA HA
is it cheap, then?

yeah me too
hopsecutioner and torpedo are pretty good

wle

favorite pilsner: pilsner urquell [meaning ‘original pilsner’ - in the original czech]

I like almost all kinds of beer, but got tired of all things IPA too.

For the hot weather nothing beats a good, cold Weizen or Pilsener, very refreshing :beers:

I fill my frosty mug with just about anything…except BUD LIGHT…sorry had to be said

Tap beer in Japan.

I’ve heard that tap beer in Germany is good too but never been there myself.

Here in Oz, generally speaking a good pilsner.

I usually drink beer in social situations. At home it’s usually a good whiskey.

Side note - it’s not easy controlling the booze (rather than the other way around) kudos to you mtndon :fist_right::fist_left:

It’s more of a testament to the quality of the beer selection in our gas stations.

American gas stations at least in my area have some decent beer staples to choose from. They often have Guinness Extra Stout, a few pale ales like Sierra Nevada and Elysian SuperFuzz, a couple of pilsners like Becks and Stella Artois, and usually some other popular beers like Deschutes Mirror Pond, Black Butte Porter, Alaskan Amber, etc. If you were on your way to a BBQ or whatever, you could grab something satisfying along the way, no problem.

What the American craft beer industry seems to be severely lacking is Hefeweizen. Sure, there’s Widmer Brother’s Hefeweizen, but I think it’s dreadful. Last time I had one I thought it tasted like rubber.

These days I basically just drink Franziskaner Hefe, and occasionally Guinness Extra Stout. I tend to have a Hefe each day in the evening, but sometimes I don’t. Some beers make me feel kind of bad after I drink one, like they just make me feel dehydrated and there’s the subtle hint of a hangover headache. I guess I am pretty sensitive to everything I consume now. Some beers like Franziskaner Hefe actually make me feel good, and it tastes fantastic. I tend to finish the Hefe in a matter of minutes.

The best beer is cold.

I lean to the IPA’s - New England IPA’s I guess I’m picky
Although I do enjoy a dark beer on occasion.
I really enjoy Guinness, and if you can find Luscious from the Alchemist I found that delicious.
Also I enjoy although pricey Imperial Stout Trooper
Dale’s Pale Ale is also on my rotation , when it is available.

We have soo many good beer options here in Oregon. I prefer ales and the barleywine style is probably my favorite. Massive grain bills and myriads of flavors make me happy.
@Hoop if you can find Weihenstephanar beers i highly recommend them for hefe’s.
