This could get out of hand if I try to list every light. Changed the title to “best thrower for the money” and removed “master thread”. I will let someone else who is better with spreadsheets compile a list of all the throwers if they would like. Also only going to list lights readily available or still being produced. The purpose of this thread is to give buyers a quick reference to the best throwers for the money since this is the question we hear every few days. Will keep the modified light section and highly modified/custom section.
In the modified category I suggest the RMM customized Small Sun ZY-T08. I have one of his Mod Package 1 lights and it is a nice compact thrower for both overall size and price. Not sure of Lux out but it is good
The DST is no longer available except for a few private ebay sales (or BLF giveaways) . Might be useful as a reference point, though, as so many members (US, at least) have one. The Defiant 3D is no slouch, either, although also discontinued.
A P60 with the Ahorton lens and spacer is a great pocket thrower, too.
Seems RMM has not options for the modded light so it’s not available for purchase. Who sells the P60 with that lens? Only going to list stock lights or modded lights with a link to the mod thread.
The Jacob A60 is probably the hands down champion thrower of the stock budget lights in cost/throw - like in the 70's kcd, depending on the stock XR-E (1000 or 900). Not sure if there's anything that can compete. Properly mod'ed/tweaked it can achieve 200+ kcd on a de-domed XP-E2, so not much money for the mod either.
With the stock HD2010's, there's a lot of variation from unit to unit, and very much depending on the battery. I'd say roughly 40's, but may be higher to the 60's. Here's some great ref's from rdrfronty:
I suspect that is an error or the quantity available (1) is wrong. Certainly available when I ordered mine less than 2 months ago. Also orders may be temporarily delayed currently as he is moving back to Seattle for law school in the next two weeks per the Mountain Electronics BLF thread.
I like the M12 - single cell so easily upgraded to a BLFDD driver, bigger reflector than a HD2010 or Yezl Y3, more $$$ of course
a simple mod'ed DST using a compatible 26650 light tube, forgot what brand but it was an A8 clone and just screwed right in to a DST head using one 26650. Combine that with a good de-domed emitter and BLFDD driver, should throw very well.
There's probably other big reflector 26650 options but can't recall off-hand.
I was thinking the same thing. The FF4 is smaller then the TK75 and btu shocker which were listed. If those two lights are mentioned so should the FF4, it’s readily available for purchase and no mods needed.
I’m a bit disappointed that no-one’s yet mentioned the Trustfire X9. The heatsinking leaves something to be desired but its throw is just as good as the Small Sun 60mm-class lights and the build quality is top-notch.
