Big batteries. 46800 and bigger

I just read the post below from @texas_shooter in a different topic, so I checked my Liitokala 4695E to see if it had the same construction method, and indeed it has. I just now realized that the ‘negative tab’ on top is just because of the cut out in the black insulator disc. :upside_down_face:
You could easily cut a small piece of thin plastic into shape and glue it in or otherwise use a few layers of kapton tape to fill or cover over the tab. (I even thought of using some (UV curing) solder mask to cleanly fill it in and harden it.)

Thanks for checking it for us. And I agree, not difficult to mod in order to mitigate shorting risk. But even so, I’d feel better if it came from factory already in a safer configuration.

Neals gadgets got the new MATEMINCO MT90 But no info about the 46120 cell. Can anyone find the capacity or even the chemistry? It could be LiFePO4.

EDIT: I might have found the reason for why I wasn’t able to post links for the prices I came across. For an explanation see my new post below this one!

The Liitokala 4695E battery appears to be on sale Liitokala Official Store and the LiitoKala Enterprise Store, at least in the AE app (on my Ipad), but I’m not able to replicate those same offers on their website (on my laptop), so I can’t post links that (consistently) show the prices I just encountered.
I will post the links to the listings/stores below though, so maybe check it out for yourself and see if it does pop up for you!

The best offers I found (in the App) where from the LiitoKala Enterprise Store. They have/had the 4695E on sale for € 11,86 (which is already extremely cheap for a 46950), but with a store coupon and a small ‘coin discount’, I managed to get it down to € 10,38! (That is with free shipping.)

After that I tried to find out how low I could get the price of a 4695E, if I selected the option for multiple quantities, and eventually landed on the ‘5PCS’ “bundle” which was priced at € 50,53. With a € 2,68 store discount (for ordering above € 33,11), a store coupon of € 1,79, a coin discount of € 2,53 and an AE Summer Sale coupon of € 8,-, the price came down to € 35,53!

So I’ve got 5 46950 batteries for (roughly) € 7,10 each, including shipping! :face_with_spiral_eyes: :upside_down_face:

I would be totally amazed if I would actually recieve them for this price, but we will see.

So it might be worth checking if those prices might pop up for you somehow:

The listing from the LiitoKala Enterprise Store:

And 2 listings from the liitokala Official Store:

By the way: I’ve got no clue yet what I’m going to do with the (hopefully) 6 incoming 46950’s, but a total of 180.000mAh could make a nice powerbank!

3 Thanks

I know our motto is: “Do I need it: no. Do I want it: yes!”. But this looks like a frontal attack of the shopping spree bug.

2 Thanks

I might have found out why I only got those offers/prices in the app and not on my laptop:

In the app (on my iPad) I’m logged in and I wasn’t in the browser on my laptop. I just noticed that the listing with those low prices is marked as ‘Wholesale’ (and: ‘Bulk savings’), with left of that a (greyed out) button for the ‘Retail listing’, which has the normal high prices. Apparently this is ‘Business listing’ with an “exclusive price”.

I’ve never applied for that ‘Business option’, nor do I run a business. I just looked at the regular Aliexpress website (not logged in) and then that ‘business option’ (and prices) are not visible. I did notice this page though:

Which shows the following banner, even if you’re not logged in:

Apparently, even when you’re not logged in, you identify as a ‘top shopper’!

Might be that anyone qualifies for AE Business?!?

Again: I have never applied for this, but I get to see those offers/deals anyway (apparently).

As far as I can tell this issue makes all the difference for those prices I mentioned above!

2 Thanks

Look what I recieved today :

I’m still waiting on the single 4695E I bought just before I ordered those 5, but at least these 5 did arrive for that € 7,10 each!

All came with relatively closely matching voltages of between 3,675 to 3,686 Volt. (The 3,686V being to outlier, the second highest being 3,681V.)

I also measured their IR at arrival (with no load) and they all were extremely close; between 1,24 and 1,27 mΩ.

I soon will do a capacity discharge test on the original 4695E I have, since I now have a way to charge it accurately to 4,20V.

Regardless of that: I’m really happy (and slightly surprised) that I actually recieved these 5 batteries for so little!

With great power comes greater responsibility. Please shows us the powerbank when done.

For sure I will post some pictures if I manage to find a way to produce a multiple 46950 powerbank that it ‘useable’. There are a lot of things to figure before I will get to that point; things like a solid enclosure/casing (3D printing I gues?!), but also a proper power bank circuitry that has high enough charging current to charge (for example) 4x 46950 in parallel, say 5A each, so 20A for example.

But before I will actually get to that point, I have A LOT of other (current and future) projects to finish first, so it won’t be happening anytime soon I expect.

For now I’ve bought the Lumintop Aurora powerbank (including a Lumintop 46950) to charge the 46950 batteries ‘quickly’. (It was on sale on AE for a good price.)
I previously have bought a different 46950 powerbank enclosure on AE, the cheapest one I could find, but it is acting really weird in several ways, so I don’t trust it to (safely) charge 46950. That’s also a reason to go for a ‘brand’ powerbank enclosure (from Lumintop), expecting I would have a better chance in getting a useable one. (Instead of taking another gamble on a ‘generic’ Chinese one from AE.)

I finally had the time to do a capacity test on that battery. I did a 5A CC discharge test with a 2,8V cut off. (The ‘datasheet’ mentioned 2 cut off voltages, 2,8 and 2,5, but I hadn’t had the time to figure out when to use each, so I just went whit the higher of the 2.)

I tested it on my Atorch DL24 (with the 46950 capable holder).

It ended up with a 31103mAh capacity, so (well) over the stated 30000mAh rating. Maybe if I would’ve discharged it to (the also mentioned) 2,5V cut off, I might have gained a tiny bit more.

Testing above the 30Ah rating was something that I already expected, because these cells appear to be ‘C-grade’/“rejected”(?) EVE INR4695E, which are 32Ah rated, so I think LiitoKala is just on the cautious side in listing its capacity.

Below 2 photos from my (humble) test setup and the final result:

I now also have a 32000mAh Lumintop 46950, which I will test next under the same conditions, to compare it to battery tested above.

I hope 46950 takes off a bit more. Its a great battery. Also hope someone makes a dedicated charger for these.

1 Thank

Thats been my gripe from day one: More charging speed please!!! I just tested the Astrolux MF06 charging. After a runtime down to 3 volts, recharge took 11h 20 min at around 15 watts. The Lumintops charge faster: The quickest was the Mach 2 46950 at a hair under 8 hours, but they’re all generally within 8h30min to 9h on a recharge. These are begging for 50W charging.

1 Thank

Not a big fan of charging batteries quickly. If you plan your time well, there should be no big rush to charge.

I’d agree otherwise, but one benefit of these big ones is you can quick charge them. Quick like over 50W is no problem.

1 Thank

Nice

Indeed, higher charging speeds should be something that the 46950’s should be able to handle. Below are the specs I posted earlier in this topic, about the Eve INR4695E and the Liitokala 4695E (probably the same cell, most likely “rejected” cells by Eve?) and they have a listed Max. Continuous Charging Current of 1C, so 30/32A and a standard charging current of 10A.

I haven’t timed the full charging time of the Lumintop Aurora, but I did stay nicely above the 20 watt, close to 22 watt most of the time, the 2 times I used it to charge a 46950.

So far I have used the Aurora (with the Lumintop battery) quite a couple of times already as a powerbank and so far I really like the big capacity it offers. I’m really thinking of ordering another one (even though the price is a bit higher than before, just as a back up, since I have no clue how long it will still be available and I don’t feel much for spending 20+ euro on a random Chinese 46950 powerbank enclosure, which might or might not be reliable quality.

I hope we will get more 46800, 46950 is too big for flights…

I just discovered this post on the Endless Sphere forum, from @Pajda_cz , who is also a member here:

If that will turn out to be true, that would mean that it will match the (general) capacity of the currently available 46950!

I agree with you that a 46950 is too big for a lot/most of the (general use) flashlights, but I think there are flashlights that could handle it, like the Convoy 3X21D and possibly also the 3X21C.

I’ve already bought a Pioneman 46950 battery tube, which should also fit both models mentioned above. I think I partially bought it to give me (another) excuse to buy one of the 2, but now I have to make a decision which one to buy (first). :joy:

1 Thank

That brings my problem back, you’re not allowed into airplanes with >100Wh in a single device

Just drain it partially beforehand, then you cant get more than 100Wh out of it anymore!
