I’ve been searching for a charger and capacity tester that works with lithium AA and AAA but have not been able to find anything. It seams odd to me that there aren’t any, am I missing something? I mean the popular ones like Littokalla, Opus and Xtar only charge NiMH AA/AAA and will not work with lithium AA/AAA, right? Or will they??
There are no lithium rechargeable AA/AAA batteries. What you call a battery is actualy an “energy storage system” consisting of a battery and an electronic modules that provide protection and charging/discharging. Other words it’s a powerbank. You don’t see chargers for powerbanks, right ? Because powerbanks need just a power source, not a special charger.
Lithium 1.5V AAs usualy need 5V power source. But this is not a rule, so better follow the manufacturer’s instuctions.
You can still test capacity in a chargers you mentioned if they recognize those batteries as a NiMH. But you should use a “Discharge test” mode only because “Capacity test” mode might have a charging stage which is highly not recommended for lithium AAs.
I’ve done capacity testing for 1.5V lithium AA’s using an older Powerex MH-C9000 charger. It wouldn’t accept the lithiums (the slot would turn off) so I would set it up to do the discharge test with a NiMh in the slot and then quickly swap in the lithium AA. That would work fine then. But I also had to be keeping an eye on the progress as the slot would also shut off when the battery was fully discharged - losing the capacity reading on the screen!
Same thing happens with the MC3000. Discharge stops at the preset voltage… the charger shows “NO CELL” and resets the discharge numbers. Have to be observant and quick (or lucky) to get a reading. But at least you don’t have to fool it into running the discharge test.
The S8000 retains the reading on discharge or will do a CDC cycle and show capacity for the discharge at the end of the cycle… and keep it until reset.
