Cometa replacement driver ?

Can anybody suggest a suitable replacement driver for the Cometa ?

Banggood has the BLF X6 X5 driver.

That is exactly the same driver as the Cometa already has, a 17mm driver yes ?
My Cometa driver pockets are nearly 19mm (18.7mm according to my measurements) so I was thinking more of a 19mm driver & opening up the pocket a little ?
Driver only needs to have low, med, high.

Oh I thought you were looking for the exact same driver. May this might fit if you open it up a bit.

Thanks for that, but is an output of 3040ma enough for the Cometa ?
I thought the Cometa was about 5-5.5A ?

You could add a few 7135 chips yourself…or if you can’t do it and don’t mind paying a bit more, you could get the 20mm FET driver from Mountain Electronics.

OK I will check out how much Mountain Electronics shipping costs to the UK are.

This possibly can help you My COMETA is a POS - does not connect with tailcap spring - burned my finger [Hobby Ending - Enough is Enough] - #69 by antiparanoico
You also may configure a Bistro for only three modes without moon (mode group 4 and moon off).

Just checked out Mountains Intl store & shipping is about $15 so that makes the driver nearly $30 delivered.
I was hoping to spend a bit less than that since I have already paid $40 for a non working light.
Maybe repairing my Cometa is not worth it.
By the time I have also replaced the lens & a couple of other things the light will owe me about $90 for a maybe 1100-1200 odd lumen zoomie.
I think I will have to have a re-think as I could just about buy a genuine Jaxman Z1 for what the parts for the Cometa will cost as they are only $58 delivered.

Hey mate are you sure its the driver?

May I ask why you can’t use a 17mm driver? The BLF A6 driver at Banggood is also a damn good driver that would work well.

No I am not sure it is the driver that is dead.
I have a Cometa that was DOA.
If you put power direct to the pill nothing happens.
With power direct to the pill there is no voltage on the led wires, but putting power directly to the led also does nothing so it could well be that both driver & led are no good.
As the drivers on these lights are loose in the pocket anyway I am just finding out the cost of a replacement driver at the moment & hopefully one that will be a better fit.
I have given up waiting for BG to do anything.

Yes I could use a BLF A6 driver but as they are loose in the pocket as the pocket is closer to 19mm than 17mm I wondered if there was a suitable 19mm driver available.
I could enlarge the pocket very slightly, or maybe reduce the driver diameter very slightly to get a better fit & that way reduce the chance of the driver moving & shorting ?

Have you fiddled with the tail cap? check if its lose? check if there is any current at the tail cap…also take out the pill from the body and try to connect that to the battery compartment so you can see what is going on maybe it isn’t making contact.

Mine was doing the same thing and it was an easy fix it was just the driver pill was lose once i tightened the whole way i fixed it. It will be expensive for you to get a 20mm direct drive driver. you can always use an adapter ring .
I also had the same thing happen on a C8 and it was just the retaining ring was lose and wasn’t making contact and the light wouldn’t turn on.

Tail cap is fine, pill is making contact & is tight, I have had everything apart & reassembled it.
Other than the poor quality everything looks fine.
What is this adapter ring you mention ?
Can I use it on a 17mm BLF 6 driver to make it fit better in the pocket ?

Yea that is what they do. You can always shave it down a little to make it fit.

Just checked that out, I don”t suppose you know if they are wide enough to take about 1.3mm off the diameter do you ?
If they can then I could take one down to about the 18.7mm my driver pockets are, put them on 17mm BLF A6 or X6 drivers & that would be a much cheaper solution than getting a 20mm driver from Mtn Electronics.
Thanks.

I am not sure sorry but i am buying some for my convoy L2 to use a 17mm BLF DD in it.

Its expensive here also with aussie dollar being so bad!

You can also use these as an adapter. But the rings are easier.

I realised after I posted that obviously the disc part is 3mm wide, 17mm internal daimater to take a 17mm driver & 20mm external diameter to fit a 20mm pocket so taking just over a mm off should be no problem.
Thanks very much for the advice & link :+1:
Hopefully in the next few weeks I will be able to get my 2 dead Cometa”s working & safe.

Could you solder a ring of thin wire around the edge of the 17mm driver? Im sure that Ive seen folks do this before.
