Would 3, 8, 12 (the original?), 24, and 36 deg. TIR optics be a drop-in for the Convoy M21H with XHP70.3 HI R9050 5000K, or does it require some fiddling such as centering etc? Also, the front glass in this flashlight seems to be AR coated - does it matter what kind of coating it is (green, purple) and do I have a choice? And the last one: there are two SS extra bezel types - is a SS bezel worth it and if so, is one type better for some reason than another?
p.s. Does Convoy store have any cupons or discount codes for BLF or otherwise?
I tried 3 and 8 deg and stayed with 8. Although it creates one ring in the beam it’s at the very outter edge of the spill and it doesn’t bother me. Also 8 deg TIR has nice petal bead’s texture.
Green makes tint rosier, purple makes tint greener.
My M21H 70.3 R70 4000K came with a green AR glass and the creamy tint is beautifull. Since R9050 XHP70.3s tend to be greener there’s no sense in wishing to get a purple AR coat.
I’m not sure but as I can see, there’s only one extra SS bezel. You’ll get a smooth SS bezel by default. And if you like crenulated design of the optional one then why not ?
I think only when the charge level is low the button indicator should flash (didn’t check that).
With charged battery there’s no indication at turn on.
When the light is in stepped mode (not smooth ramping), and it is turned from off to moonlight with a long click, can it advance from moonlight to low by click-holding?
This is what I did, I forget which I ended up with, 8° perhaps.
I went with the high CRI xhp70.3 HI in 4000k, judging by comments on here, I should have gone for the 4000k for higher output and nice tint from the bin Simon has (had?), the additional CRI isn’t really a big deal for me.
I also ordered the tactical tailswitch, which is just a mechanical switch. It can be a little confusing if you turn the light off with the side switch then next time you use it, you expect it to turn on with the tail switch. Still good fun and I’m glad to have it for the small sum of money it costs.
After experimenting with M21H and some TIR lenses, along with my previous experience modding my M21F for the same TIRs, I’ve come to the conclusion that those 35mm TIRs work best when there is a thin gasket between the TIR and the emitter, especially XHP70.3 HI. It focuses the light better, creating a tighter hotspot. However this is not possible for M21H without some modding since the depth of the head was designed to fit the TIRs without any gasket.
By default the emitter sits too deep into the TIR and the focusing is not optimum.
Hm, I have this light in white with the less serrated SS Bezel and FC40 - I was using the 24° lens that is incompatible with the LED til now, because the Convoy website has zero clue that they damage the LED.
THankfully I also ordered the 36° one that I will use from now on. Thanks!
Shame, shame, 24° is perfect for me…
Or I will just keep using it and not tighten the bezel like an ork.
