I wondered why California started running ads here in NC. We are as far away on I-40 as you can get on the continent. It reminds me of the Koch Brothers running ads here during the last elections. The ads were not for any particular candidates. Only saying that the Koch brotherhood was the provider of jobs and security. The California ads are in a similar fantasy strain
I was trying to keep silent for a while, but can’t help it. (update from this morning, deleted that)
Atm people are wondering why de death rate is so high in Italy, and so low in Germany.
Especially because the “red” region in Italy is the “developed” northern industrial region.
As far as NL is concerned, it looks as if we live on the wrong side of the track as well.
But since this is “stats”, even small numbers have a big impact on the percentage.
The NL situation atm is : 2,994 confirmed cases. Deaths 106. Ages from 63 till 95.
25% of the victims died in ICU, the rest in a regular hospital bed, or in a nursing home.
The majority of them was already there and very ill with another disease, and/or dying.
Agreed by relatives they were not transferred to ICU, but were give only palliative care.
A large proportion of confirmed cases (some 24%) are medical staff!
No more family visits allowed in nursing homes and specialized care facilities
Germany sofar had a higher percentage of the population tested and also earlier than in the Netherlands, so likely they were able to track down a lot more infections with only small numbers that went undetected, that makes the percentage deaths/postive tested very low. There may not be a large pool of infections that went under the radar, like in Brabant in the Netherlands where testing the complete infection tree was stopped at some point because of the numbers and limited available test kits.
This is true. I also believe it´s really not easy to develop consciousness about the need of social distance.
This is such a new situation.
Shopping in my supermarket (Kaufland) is getting better. Not such a crowd of people as in the last two weeks. But still people are coming close together. But becoming more and more careful. Maybe it takes some more days
But as far as possible I will avoid shopping in such places. They are still some kind of hotspot.
In some areas in Germany they declared today some restriction in going outside.
The most reasonable rules in my eyes are those be valid in Austria
Outdoor stays are only allowed to:
driving to and from work,
taking appointments with the doctor,
Go for a walk with the dog,
taking a walk, doing sports, but only alone or with the family
especially the last point is quite essential in my eyes. Sitting only at home alone or with children for weeks or even months - I believe this is not a good idea.
Yep…a shootdown might be “the last resort”, at least if you think as dystopic as it gets. :smiling_imp: I’m sure that’s a feasible option which is on nobody’s official list called “rules of engagement” but still I think it could get this bad. In Germany some extremists from the left party already try to rally their supporters to storm the riches, burn down their houses and loot everything. You think I’m exaggerating?
In times like these "anything goes", so with the new curfews in place - these have never happened in Europe before since WWII - there is a high risk that some people will unite against the applied restrictions and try to rebel. Apart from this very personal opinion I fully agree with Xandre's observations. Many people over here fail to comply to the rules and advices given by our leaders. Children still play outside in larger groups, young men and women meet in parks with beer and barbeque. They won't listen and they couldn't care less. So, what should "we" do in such a situation? Is there anything helpful left that could be done to mitigate the effects of the virus spread? A full lockdown of the entire country is imminent.
Meanwhile, we are counting almost 20,000 infected people. The increase is now at exponential speed.
Again, I don't want to sound too pessimistic but as far as I can assess the raging development in Germany, this small advantage of a higher accuracy with infections will soon diminish. Test kits are available on a very limited basis only. Much worse is that there is simply not enough staff available to run all these tests. The goverment is desperately seeking out for aid by reactivating retired doctors and nursing staff - with very limited effect so far. In Berlin they want to build a hospital for 1,000 patients solely dedicated to Covid-19 cases. Still they are arguing and debating. How is this gonna work? They say the hospital might be in operation in a month. In a month it will be far too late. I think we should...
cut all the red tape crap, regulations etc. to speed things up as much as possible
reroute free resources and focus them on supporting the healthcare system, i.e.
immediately set up emergency hospitals (if necessary with professional aid from China whose architects might share their experiences with the rest of the world)
recruit as much personnel as possible to support the healthcare system, i.e. involve students, retired people, all people working home office in non-system-relevant jobs to immediately do their bit of contribution
manufacture as much ventilators, masks and desinfectant as quickly as possible - no matter what the costs will be
Every day of hesitation will only cost more lives.
After Israel, now Poland also monitors quarantined people. The Polish government wants to use the smartphone to control quarantined people. The app has been launched to locate people quarantined due to the coronavirus pandemic, the Digital Ministry said. Fines or police visits are threatened if the app is not used. "People who are quarantined have a choice: either receive unexpected visits from the police or download the app," said Karol Manys, spokesperson of the Polish Digital Ministry.
Oh, great, if this happens in the US, I’m stuck, because my iPhone 4 won’t work with most of the apps out there. So I should take my $1000 check and buy a new phone.
