Hey everyone, I watched this competition last year but didn’t take part but this year I want to use this as motivation to actually finish a project.
I have this orange Convoy C8+ that was my first dedicated thrower when I first got into the flashlight hobby. I have since gotten throwers that I like more but want to be able to use this host for something fun and I found a lens that fits it well so I would like to make this 1xSFT40 thrower into a 7x519A flooder.
Here’s what I have currently. I need to order a couple more things and design some stuff to make this work. My current task is 3d modeling the inside of the head to make an insert
Currently it looks like there is a growth coming out of the host so that’s a great sign. I’m using air dry clay to get the internal dimensions of the flashlight. I will check sizing with some 3d prints afterward
I’ve done that a little bit in the past to get patterns to make small metal or wood parts, but its been a loooong time ago, and it had not occurred to me to do it for 3D printing!
Thanks! I haven’t printed anything yet to test actual fit yet but here’s the model I made with guessing and calipers vs the model I made with the clay model.
I’m really interested in this part. I’ve had an idea to convert a similar light to say a triple TIR (by gluing together three separate TIRs). I would have the same kind of situation you’re dealing with here. That looks like a great approach.
No I just used some air dry clay and let it dry for 24 hours before removing it. The clay that was inside the light definitely wasn’t fully dry when I pulled it out but it didn’t take too long afterwards. I’m expecting that it shrank a little but it was still a pretty tight fit when I removed it so we’ll see
If you do this I would definitely recommend using a color (or colors) with more contrast. The edges of the blue and orange were a little hard to make out sometimes. Black would probably be the best, or a black and white mix.
Also my optic came! I decided on the Ledil Anna 7 emitter 15 degree spot optic to try and get as much throw as I can. If I ever want more flood I can always throw some diffusion film or sand the optic
The 3v8A buck driver arrived! I needed to add a few more things to get over the $5 threshold for free shipping from Convoy so I picked up some glow in the dark switch boots. I really like the blue with the orange aluminum.
Be careful when screwing down the bezel if there is nothing holding down the lens. There is a fairly high chance of shearing the domes off the 519A emitters.
Better add an adapter to hold the TIR in place.
Is the emitter center heatsink pad connected to the metal of the PCB? Hope it is the case so they can cool properly.
