I didn’t kill the tail magnet of a Sofirn despite roasting it a load of times with a jet lighter. Enough to start browning the anodising hot, so no, it’s not fully effective. It weakened it, so it would still attract a penny or paperclip but not stick onto anything.
I’m thinking the watch demagnetiser I had to buy because manufacturers insist on fitting magnets isn’t going to be much use with the more powerful ones.
It is a pet hate, and I thank any manufacturer, like Hank, who offers the option.
The oven should work, or hold it over a gas flame. Rare earth are a fair bit more stubborn than that. Jeez, what a daft thing to do to a clip! I love a magnet rant
google sez: “At around 80 °C (176F), a magnet will lose its magnetic force and it will become demagnetized permanently if exposed to this temperature for a period”
my experience sez:
putting a magnet on my reflow hotplate set to 200C (392F) for 20 minutes, made it nonmagnetic.
so, if you want to demagnetize your clip, suggest you put it in your oven… at whatever temperature you like, between 200 and 400F, for about 20 minutes… then check if it is still magnetic or not.
@RichH that’s for the smaller keychain lights I think, as far as I can tell they don’t sell the A24 one separately, but it’s design is similar to that one. Such a dumb idea having a magnetic clip.
Be interested to know if you kill it completely. I reckon I got rid of 70%-90% but couldn’t get rid of the last of it. Mine was hot cycled rather than baked for any length of time.
I have a conundrum with my E75, I could probably get the annoying magnet out of the tail-cap, but then it has a picture of a magnet on it and there wouldn’t be one in there. I don’t know which is worse!
Because it sticks enthusiastically to anything ferrous it comes close to whether I want it to or not. Also if I’m using it around the house I have to be careful how I place it on my nightstand because the magnet and my watch really don’t like each other.
I understand the theory that it’s potentially useful, but I’ve had a couple of lights with magnets in over the years and I don’t think I’ve ever needed the magnet, just been annoyed by it. I have had a few occasions where being able to stick the light to something would have been useful, but there was nothing ferrous available.
