dw4 w/ dual flood&throw (choosing LED, and advice on bike helmet mount)

i might wanna try attaching this to a bike helmet

need help choosing an LED
Hank says
“The W1+519A domed version has throw/flood effect.”

someone says don’t get sst20 5000k or 6500k
is greenish

i wanted something warmer for floody maybe
not sure if it matters this time to make sure they’re the same LED type

should i get a 519a 2700k domed or de-domed?
and what is this “additional floody optic”?
can that be added to one channel?
or lh351d…warm tint flood

and then a w1 6000K? for throw
or another 519a but domed…whats difference domed?

i might add headband, and the 18350 extra tube
no magnet
probably add headband (anyone know what kind it is? i could get 2 and mod one, or 3d print some stuff like GoPro style mount for bike helmet)

i don’t think RGB aux was an option for m44
but i see it as option here
i might get dark grey body

found some more info online

How to change from tint-tamping to instant-switching?

  • unlock the advanced UI (if you haven’t already) by clicking 10x from off and holding the last click
  • enter tint ramp config by clicking 9x from off, holding the last click, and releasing after the first blink
  • click to activate instant switching, or do nothing to activate tint ramping

Downsides?

  • Right now, the only downside is that the 2-channel versions have a significantly brighter moonlight level than thr single channel versions. Toykeeper’s explanation here.

What LED’s are best for throw?

Osram W1’s, without question. They throw significantly further than any other emitter option, including Osram W2’s which are under-driven in these 2-channel lights. W1’s measure in at 1600 lumens on these lights. In D4SV2 they produce 53kcd and in KR4/D4V2 they produce 22kcd. DT8 will be slightly higher on both counts.

What LED’s are best for flood?

Nichia 519A’s (domed) are best overall for flood. They are fairly bright, floody, very high CRI, and have nice tint. Color temperature is just your personal preference. LH351D’s are a little brighter and floodier, but they’re not as high CRI and they tend to be a little green.

I do not recommend XPL-HI’s or SST20’s because they are fairly throwy emitters and they will require optic medication to get them to look significantly flooder than W1’s.

What LED’s are best for tint-ramping?

Nichia 519A’s are best overall. Hank stocks them from 2700K all the way up to 5700K and they have very high CRI, good tint, and good brightness too. LH351D’s are OK too if you want to get a little more brightness in exchange for worse tint and slightly lower CRI.

olight mount

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0761RX64G/

or 3d print something

i could do a 3500k, 4000k/4500k tint on the warmer flood LED
someone says a bit neutral makes it look brighter

does the light blend ramp well? to adjust both channels? or difficult to get it set again
adjust the warm flood, and cool throw, have both at once

Do be aware the DW4 is a large/heavy light. I’ve the headband and only rarely use it with 18650 in headlamp configuration due to the mass.

Instinctively I’d wonder if cool white Osram W1 and 2700K 519a would look weird, the older CREE LEDs used to have tint shift across the beam giving “fried egg” appearance.

The skilhunt (HB3?) headband is reportedly good and tacticalgrizzly has 3D printed adapters for the DW4.

I could get a 18350 tube
is dw4 heavier than armytek wizard pro max?

overall which LED config would you recommend? biking, general use, etc
any idea what headband is $4.95 that Hank sells? could add that

W1 is the only reasonable choice for throw, and 519A domed is by far the best choice for flood. The only question is how warm you want the 519A to be.

Since you want throw, don’t get the floody optic. I suggest that you ask for the Carclo 10621 optic, which is not the default–it’s much, much better than the default optic as it produces a completely uniform beam with the 519A, zero tint shift. Any other optic you get will have angular tint shift, sometimes lots of it.

either 2700k or 3500k
3500k is much more neutral, at least as i tried on a smartbulb i have here

alright i’ll ask if he can do Carclo 10621
no floody optic
just 519a domed maybe 3500k
and w1 6000k

Do you realize that DW4 is not a headlamp?

Even with 18350 small tube?

Anyone got beamshots of both modes? Is throw too throwy for headlamp?
bet it’s bulky with the 18650

More so than an armytek wizard?

Can’t find dimensions for DW4, I’ll dig mine out later and measure.

Wizard pro max:

Head diameter: 34.4 mm

Body diameter: 23.6 mm

Length: 121.5 mm

Weight (without battery): 79 g

DW4:

Weight: 84g

If you can afford Zebralight go for it.

maybe 10622
https://www.reddit.com/r/flashlight/comments/mjh6sk/review_emisar_d4v2_osram_w1_and_w2_pushing_the/

not armytek
and not dw4 dual?

Zebralight
they’re about 1500lumen

  • Beam Type
    • Floody beam from frosted lens, with 90 degree beam spread
  • Beam Type
    • 120 degree flood
  • Beam Type
    • 17 degree hot spot
    • 80 degree spill

dw4 is $10 off
i can add 18350 short tube, couple things
and still be under cost of Zebra

how’s XHP50.2 or whatever on Zebra?

maybe i can find some beamshots
wondering how much difference dual channel dw4 would be…seems kinda nice feature
Anduril whether that’s a good thing or not for headlamp…
not as durable (dw4)

https://www.reddit.com/r/flashlight/comments/11rl5x5/deciding_between_a_dw4_mule_vs_h604d/
says it’s heavy
https://www.reddit.com/r/flashlight/comments/171uhv6/best_headlamp_100/
maybe get a skilhunt headband for whatever i go with

can consider zebralight maybe later
i might just decide between 10621 and 10622 carclo optics on a dw4 with short tube

You could try my headmount without the elastic cord, attached using some double sided adhesive tape. It holds onto the light very well while allowing for easy pitch angle adjustment.

Careful with the adhesive joint though, there will be considerable torque applied and I’ve had mixed success gluing 3D printed parts.

10622 too floody for the w1?
could do 10621 to be safe

Thanks I’ll check out the 3d print too

Lets say Zebra invented rigt angle headlamps…

Luxwad YouTube channel mentions Boost driver
What’s that option? I don’t see it on the product page
luxwad says it’s $15 extra

Boost driver is the more energy efficient option. A traditional linear driver burns off the voltage difference between the cell and the LED as heat whereas a switch mode driver (boost, buck, buck+boost) actively converts the voltage. Unfortunately you can’t have that in a dual channel Emisar/ Noctigon except for the M44.

1 Thank

He mentioned it in the dw4 video
but I did find the video for drivers

You sure it’s not available in dw4? I’ll probably do linear regardless. Wonder how long this sale going for. Was since October and the countdown timer shows till the end of the month yet again.

Thanks I’m probably about set with the specs
Might add magnet tail cap, maybe maybe

Oh it is available for the DW4, I do have one with it. Just not the dual channel version, if you need two channels, you’ll need to make do with a linear driver. There’s just not enough room for a dual switch mode driver in the light.
