That shape is actually determined by the M3 design principle already. Screws can only go all the way from the front to the battery tube between the batteries, so the 3 “flat” sides must have screws in them, and can not take a button.

I could make the tube less flat, however, and make the triangle-shape less pronounced (and give it deeper fins instead).

I guess it is hard to have your cake and eat it too. Basically you are saying you would need to add more button bulk to relocate the button?

If the objective was to build a light you would enjoy using then the added bulk might be worth it. But if you want to prioritize character/uniqueness then maybe leave it as-is. I guess the nice part is you can conceptualize it and see what it looks like.

Do you have a recommendation for a free CAD program? I’ve been meaning to plan a minor woodworking project in CAD and keep putting it off.

Yeah, I’d have to omit the unique tailcap design. I might just give it a try - after all, the tailcap shape does not affect head design, so that can be changed without changing anything about the rest of the light if I realize the first proto sucks to use.

I am using Autodesk Fusion 360 - the free version is pretty okay, but I am using the much more capable student edition (not much longer, my license will run out soon).

Freecad is apparently getting better, but the last time I used it I could not really stand it. Hope their v1.0 which should launch soon improves things. I would like to drop the proprietary cloud forced F360 asap. But for now it is the best solution I found.

IPx7 USB connector with sealing flange, + an extra silicone flap (re-used the one from Convoy S21E/M21H). I’m a bit upset I had to put it at 120° from the button, and could not put it on the opposite side, but there is, again, a screw over there ^^

Some cross-sections through the current design, in case anyone is interested how I did things.

Ah! I get it now! This makes sense.

This is actually a good place, then you have the two options for charging of either tail stand or have the light “upright” on its side (assuming USB plug is compact).

You actually have a decently deap switch cavity, it’s just the plunger/boot that is very thick, with a slimmer one it would be recessed enough.

Yes, I opted for the Convoy one since I can just buy it off the shelf, and I can fit a momentary button + some LEDs inside it without issues. I do not want to have any custom parts for this made aside from PCBs and the aluminum parts. Especially nothing that requires creation of injection molds, as that stuff is only affordable in huge numbers.

Put a tripod mount on the other 120° spot. Makes it a bit more symmetrical

Bomb has been planted. My mother’s Google Pixel 6. I contacted Google support and they sent us a new phone. They want us to dispose of the old one ourselves. I heard in the states they ship fire-proof shipping boxes for the returns… I like that a lot better. I bet most people will just yeet a phone like this into the household garbage and then burn their place down.

2 Thanks

Looks good phone, just change batt .

That’s my plan now, so we’ll have 2 phones in the end. Pixel 6 is better than my current phone.

Discharge phone for safety before starting. Use solvent and it should come off easy. Glue screen back on with B-7000 or similar. Piece of cake ;))

Disposal of puffed up lithium batteries is indeed a challenge, most (all?) carriers refuse to take them so a local solution is required. I think you’re correct that this is the reason for the massive increase in fires in garbage trucks or recycling centers- people don’t know the risks, or if they do, don’t know how else to dispse of the battery…

“Disposable” E-cigs…;))

It’s still a mystery to me how our governments ever allowed this **** to exist.

I’ve had the S-word censored by sb before, just edit it for some ***, we know what you mean!

Wait, it’s only a 3 yr old phone?? Hopefully that’s just a lemon because that 3 yrs seems awfully early for the battery to fail.

1 Thank

It seems to me that in an effort to push more Wh into a cell the LiHV batteries in phones don’t last as long, and also with phones charging them at 1C or above those cells get pretty worn out. I’ve also had a puffed up cell on a phone that was about 3 years old (just puffy and not hard which means it’s usable but you have to baby it)

1 Thank

Theoretically, fast charging starts out fast and gets slower as the battery gets more full to prevent excessive damage, but I guess there are other factors too.

1 Thank

It was only 2 years old. Reddit is full of similar issues with Pixel 6, so this seems to be a recurring issue for this model.

Google replaced it (even if it was outside of warranty) and my ma already got her new phone from them - this further confirms my impression that this is a known problem of Pixel 6 phones.
