Hi guys! I’m new to this flashlight thing… Can someone recommend me a flashlight with:
-No zoom (preferably)
-Has a pretty diffused hotspot with lots of spill
-Bright and floody (at least 700 lumens+)
-Decent runtime
-Good for EDC
-Mode memory
-And most important of all, budget–preferably under $30.
Thanks! My Convoy C8 is too big for EDC and is way too throwy. Made a mistake in getting it. Oh well, it’s not a bad light though.
You’ll get a bit better run time and efficiency with a Qlite 3A driver and more flood with a triple emitter set up. You’ll need an aluminum spacer which MtnE also has(no need for a copper spacer at that current.
Yeah s2+!
Use it (or well my wife actually) with optics from Simon to get rid of hotspot and I removed some of the 7138 chips (2 out of 6) to keep it cooler.
Waiting on matching 18350 tube and will see how long it runs on a 16340 cell and maybe remove one more 7138 chip.
Ha the little tube just arrived
a 16340 fits just fine, no rattling yet to be absolutely sure I put a small oring around the cell
Yeh this is a funny little light now.
Not to keep preaching to the choir, but +1 on any of the 20mm “S-series” type lights (S5 being the smallest), with any power supply, for EDC; and to get the best, prettiest flood beam, replace the reflector & lens with a 60° (or as high as 120° if you look hard enough) TIR optic.
I’ve been trying a 15° TIR as a compromise, since I found myself wanting Throw once, but after running several dozen batteries through it, I do think the next time I have to tighten up the pill the 60° is going back in.
It’s ironic that the TIR is the cheapest single component of the light (even if you get free batteries, they still cost something to charge); but it has the greatest impact on performance OTF.
You can find optics specifically made for Cree and Luxeon emitters if you poke around, including some that look like bubbles and give a very wide even flood
Usually 20mm diameter works in many flashlights.
I agree on using optics or a diffuser film. A stock BLF A6 doesn’t have much spill, none beyond about 90 degrees. Having seen both reflectors, I doubt the stock S2+ is much different. OTOH, a triple with frosted optic has nice spill up to nearly 180 degrees. Great for walking around in total darkness.
Wow, thanks guys! I was totally not expecting this much feedback. The S2+ seems okay. Also, what do the different degrees on the optics mean??? And, can someone show me a couple beam shots? That would be awesome. Thanks again!
