I just tried running my FT03 for 30sec on turbo(momentary mode) and immediately checked the springs. The body heated up decently, but the springs didn’t even seemed warm to the touch. I ran the light with a brand new Samsung INR21700-40T.
The spring getting hot has to do with high resistance. It might not be making good contact. Try cleaning the end of the spring. Maybe the button top is only touching the spring in one tiny spot instead of across the top coil. Is the end of the spring coil pointed up, or bent down a little? Maybe the bigger spring is not compressing down enough to contact the second spring.
No, it’s good if the springs stay cool/warm. If the spring gets hot, like really hot, it’s because of too much resistance. Resistance creates heat. Light bulb filaments have a lot of resistance which is why they get so hot they glow.
Depending on the amount of current flowing, most single, steel battery springs will get warm. The extra resistance they have will reduce the current which reduces brightness.
When you add a bypass wire, add a second spring or switch to BeCu springs the resistance decreases and the spring temperature under load will be less. The current flow increases and FET powered lights get brighter.
It’s okay if a spring gets warm or hot, but if a driver spring is really hot and the tail spring is cool, that’s a sign of something not right.

After I posted my message I came across the FT03+26650 combo offer on 1thedeals and since BG is running a promo on just the FT03 I ended up ordering the combo instead.
