@vestureofblood:
Is there a possibility to get this made out of aluminum for less?
I don’t drive my XM-Ls at 5Amps, so I don’t really need copper all the way
You could say that the C12 is an enhanced C8 - back then, in the old days, when all was black and white, the C8 was made for 3W LEDs - today you usually get an 10W XM-L in that thing.
The C12 has a larger diameter pill which should/could have more contact for better heat transfer at that interface.
VOB, How’s the thread engagement compared to the sloppy OEM threads? Are you keeping with the stock fit or less clearance between the threads? It might be hard to guaranty fitment in all C12s with too much less.
Thanks everyone who has provided links for the light and driver options.
L4M4,
I dont think having a larger aluminum pill is going to gain you anything vs the factory one.
lightme,
The threads on the factory pill in the sample lightjunkie sent me were decent. I may add 1-2 thousandths of an inch to them but it wont be much, I dont know what the tolerance from light to light is on the china made stuff.
My C12 pill is 27.7mm OD and the female thread is 27.3mm ID. That’s only .2mm engagement at any point. The threads are about .5mm deep so a pill thread diameter of 28.1mm should fit and would double the contact area. That’s almost .016” larger so only a thou or two over stock won’t do much for mine.
It doesn’t sound like much but not only will it have more surface contact at a thicker part of the thread, thermal grease can be thinner on the non-contact side.
If the ones you’re making are less than 28mm, would you mind making a shallower cut for those of us who know the max size that can be used?
