Already ordered my 1A. But it sounds like I’ll be doing myself great disservice if I didn’t order another one (I have to stop reading these forums!). Did Lucky Sun make enough extras so I can go ahead and order a 3C? Wouldn’t want to spoil it for those who reserved.
Thanks to Kronological, Dale and others who helped make this happen.
Sam, the post number 1690 IS the absolute latest from Lucky Suns BLF Special Edition, this light was taken out of our production batch for this group buy. I literally took it out of the package and put a rested cell in it to take the test for these numbers.
1359.3
690
272.55
165.6
12.28
This is the light every one will get, those are the numbers you will get with a good cell, even a rested one not fresh off the charger.
The quotations around “stock” make me have to repeat this, right out of the box, directly out of the DHL Express package, as taken from the production run of our Special Edition lights. Since I didn’t order it, I am not sure of the emitter binning. There is no indication what it is, looks perfect to me though, a soft white, no blue or orange or yellow or green. So maybe it’s the 3C? Don’t know.
Yes, I know I said the X6 was stock, and it appeared to be so. The lumens indicated differently so I opened it up and found that I had massaged the stock driver by stacking resistors, I just didn’t remember doing it! Having a horrible memory can really suck, by the way. (And I still have zero recollection of doing that to that light, I would have sworn and still would that I was keeping that light box stock for comparison purposes, so now I will have to pull one of the lights I got directly from Eagle Eye and stick a cell in it and see what it does… I have 3 of those in the boxes, put away. [built the 4th for my son-in-law yesterday for Christmas.])
Rest assured, the numbers above are taken from the D80 straight out of the package, when DHL delivered it at nearly 11:00 at night.
Thanks for the detailed reply bugsy36. You’ve outlined the differences in these lights very well.
Please put me down for a D80 1A. Hopefully I can receive PM’s with only 2 posts!!
Oh, BTW, two kids are 8 and one is 10, hence the little E12 stocking stuffers.

BLF A6 would be the brightest (1300 to 1600 lumens, depending on batteries and spring bypass).
The D80 would be the next brightest (1300+ lumens).
The stock Y3 would be the least bright (1100 lumens).
However, the Y3 (60kcd) with its tight beam would throw the farthest, then the D80 (20kcd), and finally the A6 (8-12 kcd) with its very floody beam.
When white wall hunting, the D80 might seem to be the brightest due to its brighter hotspot. But if you did a ceiling bounce test, the A6 would be slightly brighter.
And the Y3 has the advantage of a much larger battery. So, after half an hour, I think that it might be the brightest. If you have the Y3 extension tube, then the advantage of prolonged runtimes at max output is even greater.
Note: I have a BLF A6 and a Y3 (with extension tube). What little I know of the D80 comes from what’s been reported in this discussion thread.
The Convoy L2 is also an excellent choice with the 26650 cell, longer run time and a nice tight beam. Probably a better finish than the Yezel, Convoy has some nice ano and the matte black is just exceptional. Simon’s working on a new batch with an extension tube, so the longer run times would be available in that light as well. It doesn’t have the side switch like the Yezl does.
I like the aesthetics of the L2 more than the Yezl Y3, I find the Y3 to be ugly, but it works well and that’s the real object anyway. Converted my Y3 to MT-G2 so I don’t have a way to compare it to the others in question. With the big 6V MT-G2 the Yezl works surprisingly well.
Edit: The Yezl Y3 an Convoy L2 are in a different class when talking about the small lights like the A6, which is a tube light, and the X6 and D80, which are a step up from tube lights as they have a larger head (about 35-38mm) Looking for an all round possibly all nighter type light, these larger lights are the way to go. The Courui D01 has triple 18650’s, would be keeping the form factor and it’s also an excellent light, in a similar price range at around $32.
Just got a e-mail from ups, package scheduled for delivary today ? Can’t think of anything other than some d80 goodness that I have coming ,we’ll see ,how much would 6 of’em weigh 4.60 lbs ?
Don’t forget what Dale said about the Convoy L2. I also live in the country and if I hear coyotes or I need to see if the chicken coop is locked up and have a good look around I find myself reaching for the L2 more than any of my other lights and mine is just the stock XM-L2 version. It has a crazy bright intense hotspot and a very wide circle of useful spill. It also out-throws just about everything I own. For the purposes you stated that would be my number one choice though to be fair I don’t have my D80 yet. It should be here very soon though. I’m looking forward to that but if I end up choosing it over the L2 for those purposes I’ll eat my shorts. On the other hand if you need it to be a more compact pocket light, that rules out the L2 unless you’re talking about a larger coat pocket. Just my opinion…
1,600lm on the A6 is after spring and switch bypass, and cannot be compared to the 1,300lm of the D80. With the 20mm reflector the throw is very limited, even a P60 driven 2.5A appears brighter in 20ft range.
For outdoors use the D80 will seem much brighter, the throw is comparable to the C8 SMO and better than the X6. And then there’s the L2 on top of All of them.
Man I don’t know how you pulled that off but I’m not so lucky. I ordered my 3 on the 15th as soon as I got the code. Got an email from GB on the 16th that it had shipped. I paid a few extra dollars for faster (3-7 business days) shipping with tracking. As far as I can tell from the tracking site though it’s still in China and an transit to CVG airport.
If your UPS delivery today is 4.6lbs, get ready to eat fruit cake.
4 D80’s will weight about a pound, pound and a half. And they wouldn’t be likely to be coming from UPS unless you paid like $70 extra for shipping. Wishful thinking there, but please let us know, we all love a good mystery!
I meant to compare the BLF D80 to a stock X6 last night, with an A6 thrown in for good measure, and danged if I didn’t forget! I’ll set the lights aside so I don’t forget to do it tonight… (knowing me I’ll find the lights tomorrow and wonder how they got set out…) I’ll get pics tonight, video if we’re lucky.
