Hank D4V2 with 219B SW45k

Hello Everyone,

Long time lurker, first (well second, I couldnt stop myself from commenting already elsewhere!) time poster. Big time enthusiast!

I have… quite a few hank lights, and I love them. I recently was hearing about the famous SW45k and its rosiness, so I ordered my… 7th? hank light with it.

Before I go farther, I have a T3 with a 519a 5700k that I dedomed, and I love it. The 4-4.5k it seems to have dropped to is perfect with a hint of warmth, and I got that lovely hint of rosiness from dedoming. Fantastic. Wish I bought this hanklight with that instead

So I got the hank in with the 219b, and I really hate it. It barely has a hint of that rosiness I was hoping for (the 519 dedomed is much rosier I think) and the 4500k is very flat white, not cold but not warm. I was hoping for a touch of warmth on it, but I dont have any.

All that being said, I have a little bit of soldering skills and a heat plate, and I figured I could just swap the 219b to the 519a, but it looks too difficult to me, hank really gets those wires short and tight (and clean)

I guess I am left with a debate – do I sell it, should I just keep it in my collection, or maybe someone can help mod it? Does jlhawaii808 help with this? My only fear is this is gonna make me order an 8th hank light now, heh.

If you’re not confident doing it yourself its probably worth selling it & buying what you want.

I was really intimidated the first time I emitter swapped a D4V2. I believe I only tried it after upgrading my soldering iron. In retrospect, I don’t think I could have done it with the crummy iron I used to use - it didn’t get hot enough and the tip I had was too big for the aux wires.

That being said, it wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. I also have a dual channel version, which is a bit more difficult, but certainly doable.

I’d call it intermediate level difficulty. Just my thoughts - up to you what to decide.

agree, and the not warm is what I like about it, during the day, when my eyes are adapted to daylight

at night, when my eyes are adapted to my Incandescent house lights, I prefer a warmer light than during the day.

they each have their uses, under different circumstances

I like warm for relaxing uses, I like sw45k for activities when I want to be more alert

These are my two favorite LEDs, I use sw45k during the day, and the DD 519a in the evening:

Yes I am not hating at all. Its just I have a lovely D8 with 519a 5700k that serves the purpose of a lovely pure white (without the rosiness unfortunately). Its just not what I wanted, at least not in this host

That’s a great photo by the way, that is very close to spot on of what my eyes see with mine over here for the SW45K.

glad we see eye to eye… lol

fwiw, when the sw45k first came out, around 5 years ago, it was the only 9080 LED… the extreme pink of those D180 LEDs became a sign of Ultra High CRI Ra And R9

but there was consumer backlash against the extreme pink tint, and the lower output compared to Low CRI LEDs

So the D180 was followed by D200 (11% brighter and less severe pink tint), and later that was superseeded by D220 (another 10% brighter and GREATLY reduced pink tint, which is where we are now.)

Presently available D220 sw45k have very little pink tint, as you noticed.

for illustration purposes (tint also varies with output), here are some of the sw45k I have owned… (they have corresponding Tint duv differences ranging from -0.0125 down to about -0.0035)
