How do you make your flashlights less slippery?

I still have my Lumintop FW3A in my coat, but especially in winter it can feel a bit slippery.

Been thiking about filing some grooves in the head to make it more grippy, or adding some kind of grippy tape. Any tape you can recommend?

What do you guys do with ‘slippery’ flashlights?

Old bicycle inner tube.

Why, hockey tape of course! (Canada, eh?)

Not only does it feel grippy, it protects the finish while the light is grinding around among my keys and pocket knife and it’s replaceable it seconds if it gets shabby after a month or two.

Ours is inner tubes are a bit wider than the light… any tips?

Oh, that’s actually a good idea, if it sticks to aluminum… did you try that?

I’ve used it for a long time, it works great. Sticks real good. I have a ‘many-times-modded’ 20 year old Fenix 1-AA that’s been bumping around in my pocket since new. I just changed the tape a week or so ago, and it looks like new under the tape. Any residue comes off easily with a dab of isopropyl alcohol.

Skateboard grip tape might work. :skateboard:

O-rings or gaskets. They can be adjusted to where fingers come in contact as well as slipping into a jeans pocket and position it for friction fit at pocket edge.

Talon Grip Tape from Amazon.

  • Relatively cheap. Comes in a sheet for about $10.
  • Extremely grippy.
  • Not bulky
  • Can be cut into various shapes.
  • Can be removed and does not harm the flashlight’s finish. Does not leave a residue.
  • Won’t fall or peel off your light unintended so long as you follow the instructions and use a heat gun or hairdryer on it after you apply it.

You could ask at a bike shop if they have some old inner tubes that they replaced. As you are going to cut it up anyway, buying a new would be a waste.

I also use large square profile O-rings like the type shown here by @Nachtfeuerzeug. IIRC, this type of o-ring was used in VCRs.

And then I have also wrapped flashlights with this type of Self-Fusing tape which works really well, is relatively inexpensive, and is readily available at most any hardware store.

The Nashua tape is really coax seal Coax Seal — ABR Industries

It basically grips to itself, its somewhat tacky, and best of all you can remove it ten years later with no residue.

There’s a ring you can add to your FW3A that would help(depending on how you hold it):

That type of self-fusing tape is fantastic for adding grip to most anything that can be wrapped.

For anything else that doesn’t require being wrapped, or where preserving its appearance is important, then the Safeway tape is my top choice.

BTW, the base material used for most of the custom-cut firearm grips on the market is Safeway’s Rubberized Traction Tape

Interesting, thought it was only used for waterproofing antenna connectors (hence the name coax seal.)

I have carried the FW1A in a horizontal nylon belt pouch since it came out. I’ve been through a few different pouches. I don’t really want to add a whole lot of resistance to sliding it in and out of the pouch. So I have used a rubber o-ring to aid in cigar grip and I’ve tried a thick rubber band. Now I just have a few wraps of 2 mm paracord. I add a leash to all of my lights and the leash really helps with small lights because no matter how you grab it you end up pinching the leash with your ring and pinky finger. So even if it does slip you’ve still got it most of the time. I still have dropped it on many occasions so the system is not foolproof.
The guts have been removed from all paracord. On the 2mm I tie either a granny or overhand not and then cut and burn and fuse the ends into the knot so it doesn’t move. A few wraps of regular size paracord would probably work also if additional thickness doesn’t matter and you can keep a somewhat small knot. And if you use a bright color such as yellow you have a better chance of finding it if you were to drop it at some point without realizing it.

If you can find heat shrink tubing in a size that would accommodate the tube, you might try that. I use it on the i3 eos that I keep on my key ring.

Thanks for all the replies guys.
I actually ordered the Tactical Grip ring which I thought, but upon arrival it was a different shape! It was for a larger light… 21700 I think.

I might actually be looking into those kinds of tape, and perhaps do some filing to see how that comes out…
Some recommendations seem to be only avaialble in certain countries, but I could look for something similar here.

I’ve seen some of those hockeystick tape here, and might look into that.

I also found some anti-slip tape for fitness equipment. I guess that should be pretty strong as well

I use non-skid tape and it works fine on my guns and flashlights.

If what’s available in Holland or the EU is anything close to the tape I use on some of the bars and attachments in my gym, then it’s probably a thicker, less stretchy, more durable version of the Self-Fusing silicone tape mentioned above. If it’s tacky enough, then it should work.
