It’s time for me to add moneys to my PayPal account so I went to my local CVS to buy another GreenDot card. I couldn’t find them so I asked and was told they don’t carry them anymore. So I tried other stores and HD and Lowes and they are nowhere to be found. When I looked online I found out that because of all the scamming, they are no longer offered. The way a GreenDot card worked was a card was bought for $5 plus whatever amount of money that was to be loaded onto it. This had to be paid in CASH at the store. There was a scratch off PIN number on the card that would then be entered into PayPal, and they would take the money off the card. Even though there was a $5 premium, I felt it was worth it as all I was ever putting at risk was the cash on that card.
It seems that in order for PayPal to accept money from a credit card, I have to give them a bank account #.
This I am NOT willing to do, can anyone blame me? Target, Home Depot, IRS, the VA etc, etc have proven not to be trusted with our accounts. In fact my Discover Card has been compromised twice in the last year alone.
How else to get money into my PayPal account? Some sites now only accept PayPal
I think you might be stiff out of luck. You could get a VISA Debit and never keep more than $5 in the account, provided you can get them sans fees where you are.
I trust them as far as I can throw throw them. Paypal has never got my bank account #.
I use prepaid visa gift cards. Only cards labeled “no fees after purchase”. I keep zero paypal “balance”. Paypal purchases just use the card directly.
Are you unable to add a card to your paypal account?
I had cc attached to paypal, than they send me a letter saying my transactions went over 10k, and I had to link my bank account in order to continue using paypal. so I opened account which only has 2-3k, and I linked it to paypal, I never had problems with paypal, but just in case something does happen i opened small account. if i did not, i would not be able to use pp.
I was able to add a CC to my account, but in order to use it they want my bank account #
I think if you check your PP account you will find that you have already given them a bank account #.
You say you trust PP, but do you know that they will not be hacked?
When you actually enter a bank account # can you be sure your own computer isn’t already compromised?
Kaspersky Labs was hacked and had been for a couple of months before they even knew!
(I am not paranoid, I just believe that I’m safer when I act as though I am)
I have three credit cards, one just for Paypal, one for on-line use and one for store purchases. All of them are paid off early each month, and its easy to check whats going on. I keep them separate to minimise the risk from hacking it also improves my credit score! (Not sure about that)
We opened an account that we don’t use for anything else and transfer money to it immediately before buying something. All that is at risk is the purchase amount for only the minutes before it is drained.
I have used PayPal for many years. They have my account numbers, since I transfer all money I receive, into my bank. Never had any issues in all this time. I have had two breeches in Discover card in two years, which resulted in new card numbers, but none with PayPal. It is all a security risk. If someone really wants your money, they will get it, it's the cost of the modern age, like it or not, someone will always find a way to steal, so evaluate your risk and if it's not acceptable, then use another method or another service than PayPal. Most likely there is no money in your bank anyhow, since the banks are using every bit of money they get, to cover their butts for huge losses. It's all a mess anyhow. When it all falls apart, no one will get their money back, no matter what kind of "guarantee" there is. Meaningless.
I work in the banking industry. I have seen first-hand how many people have access to your personal information. There is a database thousands of people access to that only requires a phone number or address to find your SSN and DOB, and those of your entire family. I have come to the realization that like OL said, if someone wants your money, they will get it (and it won’t even be difficult). Nobody is immune to hacking, so I put my trust in the guarantees of my bank, credit card company, and PayPal. If my account information gets stolen, it will cause a royal headache for me, but I will eventually get my money back and there’s nothing I can realistically do to prevent it anyways.
Edit: I’m not advocating anyone be “fast and loose” with their financial info, I’m just explaining how I treat the issue.
It seems your trying to add money to your paypal balance.
Don’t.
Notice that your “You’ll need to add a bank” screenshot says “You don’t have to add money to shop with paypal but linking a bank offers benefits”.
If you have your discover card linked to paypal then just try to purchase something that costs more than your $5.73 paypal balance. It should mention to you that it will use your balance first then take the remainder from your discover card. After your paypal balance is zero future purchases will come entirely from your discover card.
I have a one track mind, I always pay my CC balances each month and NEVER exceed limits. Now I see that my PayPal balance is just cash I have in PayPal. All this time I had no need to stuff cash into PP, just let it come from the linked CC!
I can start spending again.
BTW, OL and pilotdog68, there is an issue here that maybe some have not thought about or realize.
Super computers can go out and scrub the internet for seemingly unrelated bits of information and put it all together to the point of having something of real value. That’s what “Big Data” is all about. If you have ever watched a murder mystery, that is exactly how a detective solves a case. Each bit of information is useless by itself, but get enough of it and…………
Once it is all put together, no one will actually know where each bit of information came from so no one will be able to be held accountable!
Glad to help you with the necessary evil that is paypal.
They do set up things to make people feel they need to do things a their way. My account is perpetually half complete “Complete your profile. It’s at 60%”. Oh my! I should fix that. Just tell me what you need!
Oh wait, I need to check the temperature in hell first.
That the only way to do it imho. I use cash offline and usually prepaid cards online unless I might need some of the protections a credit card company offers. I was raised on cash. Ever be in a store where their credit card system is down? I look around me and half of the people don’t have the cash to buy a drink. :Sp
I still have mine and it’s all I use for all my online transactions. Reload at the register is instant and easier than the older money-pack but I think you can still do it that way. And AFAIK you can still get a GreenDot card. it’s not the cheapest way to go but it’s the safest way save for those gift cards- but many automated online check-outs don’t recognize gift cards so their use is limited. My GreenDot always works and it stays near empty till just before a purchase.
Paypal is a different story. I use this same card there but it will only net me an “unverified” account which has a set-in-stone spending limit which I have nearly reached so I no longer use paypal and I no longer buy on Ebay unless I have no other choice. To sell on Ebay you must have a have a verified account which you must link directly to your bank account or a credit or debit card issued there, and I ain’t going to share that information with anyone beyond arm’s reach. It’s not on any of my computers either. Paypal has no need to be the way they are and I have no need for them anymore either.
Amazon doesn’t play those shenanigans so that’s who gets my general business now. Most of the big online stores like Gearbest, DealExtreme, and so on will let me use my card directly so that’s what I do. You can’t get what ain’t there on my prepaid and you can’t get anything else or the information about it without being in strangling range of me. I feel no loss about any of this- just my $0.02 worth!
I actually got my paypal account verified through a prepaid card. Paypal believed it to be a credit card and verified me. I should have brought a dozen of those cards and verified a dozen made up accounts.
How much is the spending limit? It’s a lifetime limit?
